Which of these are good lights for an AR15?

All should be good. With the standard round handguards I would either buy a Magpul MOE forend (about 30 bucks and will have the necessary rails) or one of the rail blocks that attaches to the front sight base.
 
Cool. I know surefire is all the range, but I'm happy with my current streamlights.

So the magpul light mounts are sturdy?
 
The MOE forend has little rail sections that you can attach on different places. You can then attach those lights to the rails. The front sight post rail attachments are made by other companies. I believe Midwest Industries makes some.
 
I had a TLR-1 before...but now I have the hand held version of the TLR-1 HP (the Super Tac-X) mounted to my carbine...and holy mackeral it is UBER BRIGHT!

I purchased the handheld version because I find it more versatile and easier to use especially when unmounted. It is also quite lightweight for it's size. I can remove it from the long gun rail mount in under five seconds. However when the light is mounted to my carbine, I find that the push button switch requires that I use a vertgrip.

I have a few of the KZ mounts, and so far, OK - don't think the CAA unit was available when I got my KZs.
I have a few of the TLR lights, and they are impressive. The did not have the TLR1S-HP when I bought my lights, and I don't know if the big head would clear the barrel with my bayonet lug mounts. I do have a couple of their Super Tac X lights, which are probably identical outputs / heads as the TLR1S-HP.

AFA Streamlights with the normal size head or the larger one, I guess it depends on how far you want the light to project, and if you want a laser along with the light?
The TLR1S-HP does throw the light farther out than the smaller head units - it probably has the same amount of peripheral light, but it throws such a bright center beam that your first reaction is it does not have as much peripheral light, but it does.

I've got a flashlight box that rivals my holster box. :banghead:
Surefire's are nice (I bought a few for comparison), but I can often get three Streamlights for the price of one Surefire, and the Surefire's ain't that much nicer than Streamlights.

BTW, I also have a Streamlight Nightfigher X beside my bed gun, and keep a PT-2L on my belt at all times, and in each of my vehicle glove boxes.

I've had pretty good luck pricewise with Optics Planet and Flashlight Distributor.com AFA prices.
 
I use the supertac on my work rifle for the reason that it projects the light a lot farther than other lights. It's not the brightest light out there but I can easily identify a suspect at 100 yards with it.
 
I just use a barrel clamp style mount and a surefire positioned where I can easily tap the back with my thumb. It's rock solid, cheap and simple. Midway sells them.
 
I like the tlr1s a lot! I have 3-4 of them. After owning 2 m600's, 2 910's and a scout, I have come to the conclusion that surefire cannot keep up with weapon light technology. A tlr1s will KILL any of the above surefires.
 
I used to work for Streamlight...I personally use the Super Tac on my AR15...Streamlight management come up with some lame ass names for the lights, but the Super Tac does work well. I've had mine past 200 yards without issue.

ETA...SL offers a mount that's decent...it had "teeth" to lock the body of the light to the mount...I haven't had any issues with my mount. If you want a more inexpensive model...take a look at the poly tac.

I'm not looking for someone pushing the envelope with light technology, as I want dependability first.

Surefire does seem to be a bit behind the curve, but I assume some of that is being a bit slower and cautious to adopt the latest / greatest?

My main problem with Surefire is their MAP pricing - it keeps their prices artificially inflated.
 
As do I, but will not stand to spend 500+ bucks on a light that puts out less power than a cheap plastic 2 dollar flashlight.


My TLRs have proven to be very dependable.
 
I've been putting off ordering another Super Tac X, and noticed their new ProTac HL, so I figured what the heck...might as well try it instead of another Super Tac.

Yeah...it's a bit of personal experimention...I'm curious to see how much light it puts out after reading a few reviews and checking the specs. If it puts out a lot more than the Super Tac...well, I think I'll be officially off the deep end!

I just got my Pro Tac HL in yesterday - last night I compared it with my Nightfighter X & Super Tac X, and it's definitely bright (I think I hurt myself).

It's darn near as powerful as the Super Tac X's center spot, but with tons more peripheral light - there appear to be no dark circles or rings in the light pattern.

A LOT more light than the Nightfighter X, but we're at a point where one has to ask just how much light do I really need?
 
We aren't talking throwing it in a kiln, look at pistols with mounted lights, 99.9% of them place the end of the light past the muzzle.. I have a tlr1s that i switch between my glock 21 and the AR, its a great light for the money.
 
Yeah, I have an elZetta mount with Surefire G2 on my carbine. Not the most expensive but works well enough. Very light, too. A buddy has a Super-Tac and it does put out some light..

Just a FYI for him (if he's interested) - tell him the Pro Tac HL puts out a LOT more peripheral light than the Super Tac. If I light up my back yard with the Pro Tac HL, then use the Super Tac, I can tell the Super Tac is slightly brighter, but only at the center, where it has it's tightly focused beam.
