I have recently been looking at getting a new handgun but I can't decide what to get. I have got my choices down to two different guns, the Smith and Wesson M&P and the Heckler and Koch P2000 in either the .40 S&W or the .357 SIG. If anyone has experience with these two guns and could give me some information on which one to get or which calliber to get that would be great. Also, if you have a suggestion for a different gun feel free to post it. I don't however know very much about guns so try not to get too technical with me.

Try to keep any suggestions in the smae price range as the two listed above.

My 2 cents....

I have a S&W M&P 9mm which is one of the best pistols I have ever owned.
Guys who have the .40 cal. also say good things....Sorry, never tried a H&K P2000, so can't give an opinion.
If you do a "search", you can find MANY comments on the M&P, look 'em up for some good info.
Also, Bud's online USUALLY has some pretty good prices on the M&P's....got mine on sale for $369.00 a while back. :)

Funny - I was just in a gun shop today fondling...uh..I mean evaluating the M&P.

A little while ago, I tried a P2000 at my range and really liked it. Fit like a glove and shot nicely. After that, I really figured I'd go for the P2000. The guys at this range/gun shop were really down on the M&P for some reason (I got the feeling it was because it wasn't a Sig), but the guys at the shop I visited today were really big on them, and really down on H&K. Not so much the P2000 itself (though they thought they're overpriced), but because of their customer service. In their opinion, it's the worst in the industry, with the opposite being true for S&W. In a nutshell, they believe both pistols to be fine pistols, but the H&K wasn't worth the $$ or the lousy customer service. I didn't actually get to shoot the M&P, but I'll try it out on my next visit to the range. I'll be following this thread to see what others say.

I suggest .40 over .357Sig. Less muzzle blast and ammo is a little cheaper.

As for the gun -- handle both and see which feels the best in your hand. Every model of gun made has a different feel to it and everyone has their own opinion on what feels right and what feels wrong in their hand.

In the .40 caliber H&K p2000 is a good choice. the other I'd get would be a Sig.

I'd Get it over the S&W.

i would wait a while on the m&p if you decide to get it... i hear there is still bugs with the mags falling out, that stick falling out, and i hate the trigger, as for the hk ive shot one i love the trigger pull soo smooth i almost bought it instead of the glock but just didnt have the extra 100 for it... 600 for a lnib hk 2000 damn :banghead: not to mention the accuracy

You can get the HK with a number of trigger variants, that generally being DA/SA (with/without decocker) or the LEM trigger. I understand the LEM is akin to Glock's safe-action trigger. Go to hk-usa.com for more info. I've read on these forums some people loving the LEM and others hating it. My point being that if you're thinking of HK, shoot one first, of course, but be sure you know which trigger variant you're trying. If you can, try all 3 variants.

I'm guessing the accuracy briansp89523 was referring to was pretty good. If you're looking for an accurate HK, check out the P7M8 (though it may only be available in 9mm). They're dead accurate, though I think HK just stopped making them. But... they have a very funky grip-style decocker and you can buy a pair of P2000s for what a P7M8 costs!

This was mentioned somewhat earlier, but it bears repeating: You won't be able to find your perfect pistol by gathering info & pictures off the web. Try out a bunch of different guns and buy the one that feels best in your hand. Better yet, rent them at a range and shoot them. What feels good in your hand may very well not feel as good while you're shooting it. Take your time and try as many different pistols as you can. Also pay attention to the features available on it - for example, are you comfortable with something like the Glock safe-action (or HK LEM) trigger, or are you more comfortable with a safety and/or decocker? Are you going to carry it or is it going to be range-only? For me, this would have a big effect on how light or heavy I would want the gun.

The problem with trying out different guns is that in Green River, WY there isn't any place to do that. We have a gun range and a gun store but they are 15 miles apart so they don't let you take the guns to test.

This gun is also for range use and to take hunting, not to carry everywhere (I dont have a permit to do that yet)

Ok, I found a Sig P226R .357 SIG with night sights and a .40 S&W barrel that comes with it and two 12 round mags for $750. Is this a good gun? Is it a good price for it?

Yes, that would be a problem :( At least you have the opportunity to handle a gun beforehand.

I don't hunt, but from what I read, this adds something to the equation. If you haven't done so yet, check with your State Game Department to find out if there are minimum cartridge requirements for different game. You don't mention what you'd be hunting, but being in WY, I'm assuming it's gonna be bigger than a bunny. I understand some states that allow handgun hunting of deer require at least a .357 Magnum. It's worth checking to see if a .357sig is legal. On that note, how 'bout a 6" revolver? In .357mag, or even .44mag? For hunting and range use, I'd opt for a .357mag. A 6" S&W 686 would be perfect. You can shoot mostly .38spl and some .357mag at the range, then get some hot Buffalo Bore ammo for hunting. As a double bonus, .38spl ammo is fairly inexpensive, and IMHO, learning to shoot a revolver accurately in DA is a skill worth learning, even if you'd use SA hunting.

I like shooting the 357 sig better & I prefer anything HK over anything else, so I would go w/ the P2000 in 357 sig.
Plus, AFAIK, the HK's are +P & +P+ rated from the factory! ;)

Just to clear one thing up, I would not be hunting with the handgun (I have my grandpa's old Winchester model 88 lever action .243 for that) I would be taking the handgun along as a side arm kind of deal and possibly to finish off the animal so I ruin the least amount of meat posible. I still have to check if that is legal or not.

The HK P2000 is my favorite gun due to its amazing ergonomics. The Smith and Wesson M&P is supposed to be a major contender for Smith and Wesson.

I also favor the .40 S&W round over other rounds. The .357 Sig is supposed to be an amazing round but I think the ammo is a little expensive. I might suggest getting a 9mm as it is cheap ammo and it is also a good defensive round.

Overall I would suggest the HK as their customer service has greatly improved recently due to their new shop in Alabama. The HK Reps are also involved with the forums over on www.hkpro.com.

In the end I really suggest the HK and I suggest buying it from www.policeguns.com because of the price. They all come with 3 12 or 13 roundmagazines and night sights. They are around $700 or so plus the FFL fees.

That Sig I mentiond earlier is really looking like the way to go. I've seen a lot of good reviews for the Sigs and this way I will get both of the callibers I wanted and all for well under the MSRP
