Which pump 22 for action shooting -- Rossi Gallery 22 or Henry Pump Action 22?

I love my fairly-new-to-me Rossi 62A. Having grown up shooting an original Win 1890, the Rossi 62A is about as close as I can come without spending original Win coin to buy one. I picked this one up for around $425 on GB in 2020, it was in great shape with only a hint of rust flecks on one flat of the octagon barrel. I checked and saw there are others still on there for a bit more. (The 2020 shenanigans price increase I guess.)

The action is much smoother than the modern Rossi/Henry and it’s pretty accurate. If you want a well made, exposed hammer pump that won’t break the bank, look for one of these and I think you’ll be happy.

Stay safe.

I understand you need an exposed hammer. Do you absolutely have to have a pump though?

Generally speaking, because of the design, lever action rifles have better mechanical advantage than a pump.

This often translates into a lever gun feeling smoother than a pump.

If you don't absolutely have to have a pump, I would give a good look to a Marlin Model 39A like I posted above.

shot my rossi 62 with a marlin lever gun peep mounted on it. hit the chickens and pigs just fine. bombed the turkeys though. lol.
....was a little drizzly rainy today though. (harris mn)

I have a Henry pump. Although it is a very fine rifle the action is stiff and clunky. I don't know if it can be slicked up enough for action shooting.
And it never will be, it's a lever converted to pump and it just doesn't have enough mechanical advantage to ever be smooth...

Henry levers are really nice rifles, pumps, not so much...

Yeah, I need/want a pump. When it comes to 22's, they cycle faster than lever guns -- particularly when the targeting is more difficult than the CAS bangf/clang targeting.

I really appreciate the input.

I was aware the Henry pump was really a lever gun cludge, but I just wanted to make sure.

I also knew the older Rossi pumps were fairly good guns once they were tuned to run. Sure enough it sounds like they changed designed too. While still operationally better than the Henry, it sounds like they're really a lever cludge as well.

I'm not sure what to do now? They older Rossis are in excess in $500.00 now for one in good shape, the original Winchesters bring at least twice that.

I have an internal hammer Remington 121 that I think I'll prepare for competition. I'll then see if it's accepted for competition.
