With income tax fast approaching, I realized that I didn't have a good 12 gauge pump action. I notice that shotgun ammo was pretty easy to get even during all the mess these last few years, least in my part of the US.

My uses for it would recreational mainly, but still functional enough to be pressed in a HD role if needed. I've seen two that would fill my need well.
That is the Winchester SXP Trench model and the Mossberg 500 retrograde. I like the look of these shottys and while everything I read on the moss seems good. I haven't seen really anything on the Winchester.
Anyone with any experiences with these like to give me advice which I should pick up? I'm definitely hoping that I'll get a chance to look around at the local sporting stores this weekend to see if they have a model I can handle or a completely different one that catches my eye

Perhaps, if you (the OP) could post links to exactly which model(s) you're considering, it would help this thread.

I've only used Mossberg and Remington shotguns. I generally recommend Mossberg products, but cannot recommend Remington/Remarms at this time. I've zero experience with Winchester shotguns/firearms.

Here's one I particularly like, even though I don't personally own one (yet).

Here's another one, which if found for sale, could be taken home with little or not waiting after purchase.

I would prefer the Mossberg, especially the 590a1 or a 590
Winchester is importing sxp line from turkey

I prefer Mossberg. I had an 870 years ago, it had sharp edges everwhere, sharp enough to actually cut through skin- not a huge deal as it could have been stoned down a bit but I didn't like the controls and was put off by the quality. I've had a simple, cheap Mossberg 500 for about 15 years, I've used it hard and have zero complaints.

remingtons for me, i have been useing them for well over 50 years with thousands of shells being fired(factory-reloads) over those years. replacing two firing pins and a extractor. keeping them well cleaned and lubed helps any make of shotgun last and work trouble free. ps, it took less than 20 minutes to replace those parts on my kitchen table.

For a quick view of what's on the market currently in the older Remington 870's... go to gunbroker.com and enter Remington Wingmaster 12.... You'll find a great variety from hunting models all the way down to ex-police riot guns. My shotgun usage was in law enforcement for many years - and that old riot gun, we had both Mossberg 500's and Remington 870's, (whichever I was issued that day for years before finally having one issued to me permanently...) was always with me on any hot call. It was and still is a one shot fight ender at close quarters... I always preferred the Remington - but each to his own...

Another 870 fan here. And they run the gamut from the '70s to fairly recent in many configurations...The nice wood from my old Wingmaster is stored away, the poly is safer in the field. Several are also now sporting factory mag extensions in our less than settled times.

Sorry, I have no experience with the Mossy or Winny you listed.

I sold off my 870 MIM version and bought an old Wingmaster Riot 10+ years ago and then stumbled in to a 30" barreled one a few years ago. Both WMs have been rock solid, admittedly I don't shoot them often, but both actions are slicker than snot on a doorknob and are as accurate as I can be... actually the Trap version is probably a lot more accurate, as proved every time I try shooting clays.

This is kind of like the "which is best" Ford vs GM vs Chysler debate- but we all know Ford is the correct choice, so... ;)

I have owned both Mossberg and Remington pump actions. The Mossberg's are the only ones left in my safe. Te two main reasons I personally prefer the Mossberg are the tang safety and the fact that I don't get my fingers pinched when loading them. I shoot left hand and prefer the tang mounted safety since it is ambidextrous. I always seemed to get my fingers pinched when loading any of the Remington 870 shotguns.

Yes you can swap the safety over on the Remington but I like to keep my long guns as ambidextrous as I can so others can use them easily too.

The Ithaca definitely caught my eye, I might be willing to drop the cash for it. The reviews seem good on it

The Ambi is a big draw since I'm a lefty as well.
