I am not a Remington man(never have-never will be).Shooting for 30 years I own many other mfg's bolt guns.So the question for Remington gurus is this;a good freind has settled on a .270. He wants a Remington 700(stainless) because a coworker/ gunsmith will do all accuracy upgrades for free.We hunt Pa.mountains mostly treestands 60-100 yrd shots, occasionally sit at edge of fields(200 yd shot). Not much stalking or still hunting.I dont do Remington ,dont know their models, and they offer many. With info given what say Remington gurus, which model?Budget 600-800 bucks....Thanks Don

A Remington wouldn't be my first choice, but if I were buying one it would be one of the mountain rifle versions.

Not sure those would meet a $800 budget. Few in SS would, but this would, and would leave a little for customization. I'd start with a new stock and cutting 2" from the barrel.

Not cataloged, but Sportsmans Warehouse and Dicks carry a SS ADL that sells for $499 last one I saw. It came with a cheap throw away scope. If I were having custom work done anyway one of those would be near the top

why no love for remington? with that budget i would check out the remington 700 sps stainless. they can be had for the low end of his budget with pretty dang good accuracy out of the box.

dprice3844444: I've had a Rem 700 5R for about 10 months. It is an awesome rifle. Easy .5 MOA at 100 with heavy SMKs or Amax. I shot my first F class match a couple of weeks back. It did great, I pulled a few. However, It is a bit out of the OP's budget.

Agreed. I just picked up a SS ADL from Dicks for $400.00, mounted the throw-away scope on an old .22, and installed a Mueller 4-12X40 ($120.00). The difference in accuracy between it and my Winchester Model 70 with a Leupold VX-2 is negligible. The Remington 700 ADL is more than adequate right out of the box.

Not that I have no love for the Remington, just never owned one and at this point why start now.

I have never been a Remington fan either. For some odd reason I have a 700 mountain rifle in 30-06 that I really like for hunting. It is accurate enough to make one shot kills if I do my part and light enough to pack around without getting a hernia.

For the Rem haters:

1. I have Rems, Rugers, Wins and Savages...all are reliable, accurate and useful for the purposes I had when obtaining them.

2. I have never had an unsatisfactory Rem 700.

3. The below suggests the intrinsic accuracy of these rifles...all are 100 yard targets.

id recomend the stainless sps. Ive had a few sps 700s and theyve all been accurate. As a matter of fact the most accurate bolt gun i own of any configuration is an out of the box blued sps in 06. It outshoots my varmit guns if i keep it cool

i found and saved this old(1955)722 remington in .308 that was sitting in the back of a sometimes open gun shop owned by a old man ready for retirement. it had been glassbedded sometime in the past(a good job) and had a older 4x weaver on it along with about 1/4 inch of dust. i cleaned it up and replaced the weaver with a 2x7 leupold scope and with 43grs varget and 165gr nosler ballistic tips shots into a inch or better from a rest at 100yds. and it worked as well this year as i,m sure it did in 1955. i sold the weaver 4x scope for 50.00and that brought the price down to 225.00., if a older rifle comes up at a good price, please take a good look at it. eastbank.

I have an older 700 ADL 30-06 in stainless that will shoot 3 round .75 moa groups all day long with 180 grain Winchester power points. Never seen a 700 that wouldn't shoot under an inch and a half and most are better than that.
