Its that time again to buy something, I FEEL THE NEED!

Just want some opinions on the S&W 60 & 66

This would be for carry & at the range about 100-200 rounds per month.

thanks.

EDITED TO ADD:
yes my first revolver
shot a friends 66, great gun.
shot a friends 637 with 38spl+p, OUCH!
right now im leaning towards the 66, my usual carry is a Glock 27 in 40SW.
have a price on a NIB 66 for $449, before bargaining/begging/cash.
thanks

Well, to start with, whaddya got? If you don't have a j-frame, then you need one; unless, of course, this is your first revolver. I'd assume, given your choices, the 66 would be a 2.5"? or maybe the hi-viz 3.25"? Help a fella out and tell us a bit more about what you've got & want, eh?

I just picked up one of the M66 3.25" HiViz models. I love it. What a fantastic little gun. Nice and strong but not huge. Great for the range and carry.

I can see a use for either model; the difference being
that the S&W model 66 in any barrel configuration will
have target (adjustable) sight's, whereas the model
60 will not. For self-defense scenario's the 60 or 66
(the latter with a 2.5" barrel) would be an excellent
choice. When I carry a revolver, I carry an old model
60 with the pinned barrel and "R" serial prefix; and
chambered for .38 Special.:D :uhoh: It makes for an
excellent concealment weapon; even with its exposed
hammer!:)

I love the M0del 66 3" F-Cpmp and the regular 2.5" version, but remember the M60 also come in a 3" version with adjustable sights. Dennis

I think a J-Frame is clearly a better (easier to deal with) carry gun than any K-Frame. That said I carry a 2 1/2" Model 19 every day with no major intention of changing:scrutiny:

Reason for me is that I love to shoot, and I know I need to shoot my carry gun. The extra weight, nicer trigger and better sights make the 2 1/2" K-frame a much better range/fun gun than a J-frame to me, while still being a pretty darn good carry pistol.

Either can do either role but I think it depends on which side you want to hedge your bets: shooting or carrying. For me I think the K-frame does a better imitation of a concealed carry gun than a J-frame does of a range gun. YMMV

I have both a model 60 in 2" and a model 66 in 2.5". I guess I go with the flow here. The model 60 is a little easier to conceal than the 66, but since I mostly dress like a slob, it doesn't matter (I can conceal a Ruger GP and Smith 686 both in 4" without a problem). On those rare occaisions where the wife and kids use duress to get me to dress like their perception of a human being, I drop back to the model 60 or a Kel-Tec P32.

The 66 is a great little gun. While slightly better than the 60 at the range, the short sight radius makes it somewhat difficult to control accuracy at ranges beyond about 15 to 20 yards, the 4" tube is much better here and not that much harder to conceal with a IWB holster (extral 2 to 2.5 inches under your trousers).

If range use/IDPA/falling plates is of primary concern, go with the 4" 66 or a 686. If concealed carry is paramount, either the 60 or 66 in 2.5" will do (66 in 4" ain't bad either).

I love the J frames, though mine all wear 3" or longer barrels.

No longer own anything larger in a revolver, as I just don't enjoy them as much.

Good luck.

I can't find my receipts at the moment, but I paid somewhat less than $400 for my model 60 (2")NIB about 3 years ago. My 2.5" model 66 I bought about two months ago for $415. This is lower Alabama.
