I might be buying a Smith and Wesson 66-2 from a friend. I need some guidance on a fair price, so looking for value range. Gun is engraved (laser etched?) with-

LAW ENFORCEMENT HERO'S MEMORAL
S & W 357 MAGNUM
1986 LIMITED EDITION

and stamped "FOP" on frame. It is new, in presentation case. I am NOT interested in this as a collector piece. It will be shot, and shot often. I guess the values I am looking for are -

1) As a LNIB shooter

2) collector piece

I figure I can find a very clean used piece for @ $350, so what if any premium should I fairly attach to a "soon to be used", very clean 66-2?

If it is worth a chunk more as collector, I'll have him put it on gunbroker or S&W forum.

Thanks!

Many of these are really nifty, but unlike Colts and Winchesters, do not even rate a separate listing in the Blue Book. I'd be very careful about buying one at any kind of premium.

Blue Book sez "While these guns (commemoratives) do have special intrest, they do not have the collectibility or desirability of many of the standard models listed". Fjestad goes on to say they are not valued due to regonial demand. A model 66 @ 100% (NIB) is valued @$395. Hope that helps.
