Well I got the rifle I wanted, so not its sitting at the shop waiting to be put together. I need to figure out which Scope rings and mount will work well for the 700. ITs chambered in .308 and I doubt that this rifle will be shot at more then 500 yards.

Sactown suggested a Weaver Grand Slam scope.

Any other suggestions. No fixed power scopes please.

TIA

Leupold Vari-X III Tactical 1" tube 4.5-14x40 A/O (edited: this is the Mil-Dot version)
Leupold Mk4 1-pc. base
Weaver Grand Slam medium rings

The mounting system is all steel and rugged enough for my usage, with additional benefits of being low, detachable, and about half the weight and cost of rings/bases by DD Ross or Badger or some others.

The base does not have any cant to it. I don't need that.
The rings are not super high.
The scope is also lighter, smaller, and less costly than the 30mm tubes, which were not needed in my case.

This system worked as planned and I'm happy with it.
The bigger and more expensive glass and mounts are great if you really need them and can justify the weight and cost.
Someday I may deem that necessary, and I can also revert back to my original stock with the bedding block in it. For now, I use a Hogue pillar bedded stock, which fit in with the plan to build a lighter long distance shooter.
What you save in the mounting system might be applied to the better quality glass.

Good Luck. :)

Well, I put a Leupold VariX II 6-18 with adjustable objective and target turrets on mine, but just because I got a good deal on one.

I'd think a Weaver Grand Slam, Nikon Monarch, or VariX II would be ideal. SWFA has one nearly new Zeiss Conquest 3-9 for $350 that would be pretty outstanding.

I second the Leupold 4.5X14-40mm Tactical, but with the Mil-Dot reticle.Throw on a Leupold mark IV one piece base and a set of 1" Mark IV rings and you have a bulletproof combination.

SKBY.

Another vote for the 4.5-14x40 Tactical. I have one on my 700P mounted with Leupold QRW rings and bases. Works great, returns to zero every time.

45R, I think cratz2 has got it! Otherwise, there were some pretty good suggestions in this thread from a few days ago. I have been looking for a cheap high quality scope to build a NEF/HR Ultra Varminter. But luckily, I've got months and months to look around before that ($) ever materializes.

Congratulations on the Rifle!!

I've used a 6X42 Leupold on a woodchuck rig for a long time now . In all sorts of weather and lights conditions , not at 500 yards mind you, it hasn't failed once .
The other rig is a 700 in .308 with a 6X Kahles .:)

Sightron Mil-Dot.

Kind of a well-kept secret, but an awesome scope for the money. And this is coming from a guy who normally runs Leupolds on his other rifles.

I have a Leupold 6.5-20x50mm Long Range Target Scope with side adjustible focus. I have it sitting on an IOR 20 MOA angled base with 30MM IOR rings. I really like this set up. There is just something inherently satisfying in having a spotting scope on your rifle if you need it. I use my rifle in 1000 yard matches and that is why I have the angled base on it. If you ever even have an inkling to shoot that gun past 800 yards, get the angled base now. It saves your from having to mess with it later.
