which shotgun sights for close engagements/slugs?

This is my bear/zombie paranoia gun- a fabarm 14" barrel(Yup- Canadian) Im looking for the best sights for close up quick shots- not sure if that would be a bead because I have trouble snap shooting things at 30 ish yards and even closer with a bead. I just have trouble aiming at all with it- looking for something fast to put slugs on a charging beast.


Heres the kicker- it cant be ghost rings. Too bulky/too much to snag on and my shotgun is very KISS at the moment.

I read a bit about the benelli R1 sights being pretty quick rifle sights- opinions welcome!!

For your stated purpose? Largest colored bead you can find or a fiber optic. The contrast gives your eye something to focus on.

Rifle type sights are great for shooting slugs, but they aren't great for snap shooting. At close range with practice you can just ignore the rear sight, bit that only works at very close range.

30 yards? You have time to line up the sights or there's a very good chance of a miss with slugs or buckshot. I consider 'snap shooting' to be a lot about the FIT of the gun and more suited to 10 yards.

I like a front post and a rear ghost ring with big apature for something like this. It's what I have set up on my home defense shotgun and my "elephant" rifle.

Oneounceload has the answer. If you are trying to aim with the bead you're doing it all wrong. Keep both eyes open and point the gun at what you want to shoot. If you stop to look at the bead you will miss your target every time.

The sight radius on the 18.5" RS 870 barrel I have at hand is 12.5". I'd guess you'll get about an 8" sight radius on your SBS barrel if you use rifle type sights with a similar layout. My HD 18.5" runs a brass bead.
My 28" 870 runs fiber optics front and rear which really helps with slugs at a hundred yards plus.

HK MP5 front/rear weld on sights, with XS Systems Tritium Big Dot.
Super fast target acquisition an accurate.

Yeah Im wondering about the bead because Im shooting slugs- not shot. Its essentially a rifle this thing. Can I put rounds on a moving target(bears head) with just a bead is the question...not sure if I could point shoot a slug like that. maybe I just need more practice

all those sights might be of help at 100 yards, but your statement above says 30 and quickest follow up - learn to let your hands and eyes guide the muzzle to where you want it to be

Basically that's necessary no matter what sighting system you use. Hardware isn't a substitute for software...

All of my thumper experience is with police shotguns (the plain old riot gun configuration, 18" barrel, simple bead sight - with that slight groove in the receiver end...). With just a bit of practice anyone should be able to hit a
10" paper plate at 25 meters with ordinary rifled slugs time after time with that rig. Simple setup, nothing to snag in the brush, nothing that can come out of alignment the way things can in daily carry situations.... utterly reliable, period.

All that's needed is the shooter's capability to use it -which comes with careful slow practice sessions. The real reward is the self confidence the 'gunner gets when he/she learns that they can put the round where it's needed.

I'd suggest you spend the money you would have spent on sights on a couple of cases of clay targets, a hand thrower, and some target shells.

Once you learn to hit small moving targets with a shotgun, you will realize sights are not at all needed to hit a charging bear!

They will in fact just slow you down!!

I'd suggest going to your local trap/skeet/sporting clays course instead of the thrower - that way you can get targets upwards of 42mph going in a variety of directions
Besides, sporting clays is just plain FUN
