I have been trying to get the Sig P238 to run consistently so as to feel comfortable pocket carrying. Yet, I have a Rohrbaugh R9 that never misses a beat. I look at the size of each and I ask why would I want to carry the Sig. I like the little Sig, just can't get it to fire consistently with most any ammo without FTE, usually on rd 6. Sig is sending a new recoil spring to correct the problem. We shall see. So, at this point it seems a no brainer to get a sure 7 rds of 9mm vs. a maybe 6 rds of .380.

Everyone should have a hobby.

I carry my R9 everyday.

JohnBT.....your dispicable:eek:

I like that in a man:D

I just don't want to become a gun tester.

Yep. :) Reliability wins out every time.

I thought the P238 is a 6+1, which would make the ammo capacity of the two guns the same. Also, I am quite struck by the similarity in size of the two guns. How do you like shooting the Rohrbaugh? It looks like a bit of a handful.

If one gun is reliable and one is not then there is no real question about which is a better carry gun. Reliability is perhaps the most important trait in a carry gun.

The R9 with recommended ammo does not offer a substantial advantage in terms of ballistics over a .380. So the whole 9mm thing wouldn't carry much weight in my decision. I'd be much more interested in how well I shot each weapon, things like split times on first shots and follow up shots, etc.

Any reason your Mustang is not in the running?

Actually, this is the primary reason for the post...I too was surprised by the size almost being equal. The R9 is not that bad on recoil...if you wanna talke hurtin hand....I have a Seecamp 380 that I don't look forward to more than a mag....then your done:D

please, tell me how you figure this.

I'd carry the R9.

Let me see if I understand this:

Someone is trying to decide whether to carry a .380 that has proven to be highly unreliable, when they already carry a reliable (and similar sized) 9mm?

Even out of less than two inches of actual rifled bore, a 9mm/115 JHP standard pressure should reach around 1000 fps, a .380/90 JHP around 850-900 (estimated). But, since we have no actual chronograph data (factory listed velocities are out of much longer barrels), I will reserve judgement.

That is a valid concern, as is relative shooting comfort. I've often said that one will not practice with a gun that is outright painful to shoot.

This is not painful to shoot.....breach locked

This is painful the shoot...blow back

SEECAMP-2.gif

I pratice with both...enduring the pain...on the latter:)

I couldn't believe how painful the Seecamp .380 was. Banged my finger so hard against the triggerguard I could only manage about 3 mags full. Functioned flawlessly and was surprisingly accurate at 7 yards (no sights, shot about a foot high) but boy did it hurt. The Ruger LCP is a pussycat by comparison.

IMTHDUKE... you have a 9mm that functions perfectly and is the same size as your .380 that doesn't. And you ask which one you should carry? ;) I'm guessing you just needed a reason to brag about the Rohrbaugh. :D

+1 ;)

You lucky guys with those R9s! Not available here, and would cost $2500 if they were. :(

No, actually what I am wanting is for a few guys to say...."what were you thinkin?"....I actually liked that little Sig, and still do, I thought about replacing the R9 with the Sig, but haven't been able to get the Sig to run right.:) After look at the two side by side...I'm say..."what was I thinking".

1Kperday.....my experience exactly:eek: I have even thought about selling the Seecamp just because I have it's impression in my right palm.:D

I think you have to go with the one that works all the time, Do you find the healclip mag release a hinderance in reloading? I find them to be a real pain in the @ss. And do you think the 9mm standard load is as good as or better then 380? What if you reloaded the 380 to hotter loads? Would that make a Difference? I reload the 380, and have come up with a load that is some what hot and uses the xtp 90 grain bullet. It will pick up a gallon jug of water and flip it over, by no means is it a 9mm+p but it is a lot better then standard 380.

Who made that R-9 holster, if I might ask? Looks nice.

Reliable R-9 vs. not so reliable 238? Not much choice here.

But I've had the Sig 238 for a while and mine is totally reliable. I question why Sig thinks it's the recoil spring when you say it usually malfunctions on the sixth round. Sounds like magazine problems to me. I have three...all work fine. Rounded followers. Two came from Top Gun Supply and were identical to the original.

I also have two of the top gun mags and in addition to the original I also have two Colt Mustang mags from Midway and have not had a single malfunction from any of the five mags.

With a chronograph. :)

Take your Rohrbaugh and shoot it over your chronograph. The tiny gun suffers from significant velocity loss. Silvertips and Speer gold dots, the recommended ammo for what is undeniably a rather ammo sensitive gun get about 1000 FPS in the 124 grain loading and 1050 in a 115 grain loading. You pick up nearly 300 additional FPS with a 4” gun. Thus, it is folly to think that you are getting true 9mm performance. Many a Rohrbaugh fan seem to think so though. From what I have seen Gold dots still tend to give very good expansion even with the reduction in velocity. However, I’ve seen hydro shocks and gold sabers fail to open out of the Rohrbaugh. A 90 grain gold dot will be north of 900 FPS out of a LCP. Double taps load with the same gold dot bullet gets you around 1030 out of an LCP. So is 20 FPS and 25 grains really a notable ballistic advantage? IMHO no it is not very meaningful at all. I think a lot of people place far too much stock in the fact that the R9 is chambered in 9x19. Again I'll take shot placement and follow up shots over what is a pretty minor ballistic difference.

Load 1 Double Tap 90 grain speer gold dot out of a LCP

Energy: 211

Momentum: 13

Taylor KO: 4

Load 2 9x19 124 Speer gold dot out of an R9

Energy: 275

Momentum: 17

Taylor KO: 6

Load 3 9x19 115 speer gold dot out of an R9

Energy: 281

Momentum: 17

Taylor KO: 6
