which trigger is best?

In terms of lack of overtravel, short reset and crispness of break its difficult for any other design to match a mediocre 1911 trigger.
Single action only is the key to the sliding trigger. Making it cock the hammer would require a very long pull. The CZ/EAA Witness pivoting trigger is a DA/SA that can have a good SA pull, as can SIGs but out of the box pretty much even the worst 1911 trigger beats any other non-customized gun.
Low volume (custom shop standard production) guns like the EAA Witness Limited (SAO) which gets a lot of extra hand fitting at the Tanfoglio factory can barely best my RIA1911 factory trigger at a cost of ~$900 vs. ~$300. I'd wager RIA makes and sells a whole lot more RIA 1911s than EAA does with the Witness Limited. There are other things besides the trigger to account for the price difference, but best trigger for the buck 1911 wins, best trigger money no object 1911 wins.
To me its the trigger than makes the 1911 so special.

I think the HK VP70 had a sliding trigger, and was double-action only. However, it was striker-fired, rather than hammer-fired. From all reports I've seen, it's an unusually long and heavy trigger pull. I don't know of any hammer-fired DA/SA or DAO pistols with straight-pull triggers, offhand.
