I am thinking of getting a Trijicon accupoint scope to place on a bolt action 308 which I use for deer hunting. I want to try this specifically because of the illumination and no need for batteries.

I am torn on which to get. Generally, I like to hunt with little magnification, 3x or less. However, sometimes, if I am just shooting at paper targets, I will turn the magnification up. But mostly, I like to keep magnification less than 3x.

I am looking at the TR24, which is 1-4x with 30mm tube. I am comparing it to the Accupoint with 3-9x magnification, I think it was the TR20 or TR21. The 3-9x scope is a little cheaper.

Which of these is best, and why is the 3-9 a little cheaper?

I've had both of the scopes that you are talking about. The 3-9X40 is just a nothing special scope. I mean, it does have that neat illumination system, but the glass is just average for that price range and it's based on a 1" tube. Personally, that little dot in the cross hair really did nothing for me. I thought the Zeiss Conquest was a better deal. No illumination, but the glass was better and it cost less.

The TR24 is Trijicon's latest and greatest compact. As you know, it has the 30mm tube, which will help with light transmission and it's supposed to be stronger. The eye relief also remains constant as you dial through the magnification range, although I don't remember that being a problem with the 3-9X.

Get the one that's most useful to you. There's nothing wrong with the 3-9X. Get the one with the reticle that you like (since that seems to be a driving factor for you) and spend the money that you save on ammo.

One thing that I did like about the 3-9X was the smaller objective bell. If I remember, I had to go up a ring height with the larger models.

Like I said, liked the Zeiss better, because of the optical quality. Still, optical quality isn't everything. It's only a part of the package. This is something that I recently realized which caused me to get rid of a Swarovski in favor of a Nightforce.

Did you get the opportunity to look through the 3-9X?

I have the TR24 on a 7mm08 featherweight. It's kind of like my 'eastern dangerous game rifle' for backing up my sons on pigs gators etc.

The main thing about the tr24 - you will see the barrel on 1x, you can use both eyes open on 1x and "the eye relief also remains constant as you dial through the magnification range".

I like it and would buy it again.
