I am looking for a new scope for my AR15. I have a Mid length Smith and Wesson Mag pull edition rifle. My buddy lent me his Acog because he did not have a tactical rifle at the time. Well since the Potential Weapons ban he purchased one so I will be giving it back to him. I am interested in purchasing a scope of my own. I do not hunt so this rifle is only for recreation target shooting. I did enjoy the ACOG because of the 4x magnification and the clarity of the scope. some other scopes I have looked at are as follows.

TR20-2: AccuPoint 3-9x40 Rifle scope, Mil-Dot Crosshair with Amber Dot

I have little experience with variable scopes and as far as 9x goes, hows does that correlate with viewing distance?

I am also possibly interested in a red dot sight such as the EXPS2 from EOtech.

Nikon Monarch 2.5-10

I really do appreciate all of the great information you guys have to offer. I am not looking to purchase a cheap scope because I knew getting into this it would cost $$ but I also dont need Navy Seal quality and such like that.

I love variable power scopes , their only draw back is size and weight.

I prefer 3-12 , 4-12 and 4-16 over 3-9 power. There really isnt much drawback to choosing a 3-12 over a 3-9 power other than the limited choices. On the cheap side the Weaver Kaspa 3-12X44 can be had under $200 and has some features that lends itself to a mid length AR. I have been impressed with Weaver of late and have a 40/44 and a Buck Commander scope that are as good as leupold or Nikon. Check out Vortex as well, $100-$200 they cant be beat.

I thunk I am going to get Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24 Riflescope with TMCQ MOA PST-14ST-A with a Larue Mount.

I have that exact setup, vortex pst 1-4x in a larue lt-104 mount and I know you will not be disappointed.
