Just read the "budget" scope post and saw some good info. I need a scope for my "in the mail" .223 Ruger Varmint rifle. I will likely move it to a sporter for deer season (not purchased yet) so no ultra high mag optics.

Is the 3x9 the ticket here? I'll be hunting eastern oregon plains country for both groundhogs and deer this year. I have to say, I'm leaning towards nikon, but a binocular/scope package may be nice too since I'm just getting started in the hunting arena as a whole.

I got a Bushnell Trophy Series scope for about that money in the 4-12X40 AO. It works great for me and the AO makes it pretty versatile.

swift scopes - try eabco.com - are a good buy. Better than the above in my opnion. Sightron scopes are a good deal as well, a bit more expensive, but if you are wanting to use the turrets, they are worth the price.
Nikon is great, but a bit more glass on the gun is often useful for a varmit rifle. That will be more expensive than your budget
If you want a great scope for a little more check out swfa's super sniper. They are built like a tank and have great turrets.
