I'm shopping for 9mm ammo for a polymer-framed, 4.4" barrel length, semi-auto house gun (G17).

The 2004 Winchester LE ammo catalog ( Click here for ballistics & barrier tests ) lists three Ranger -T- series loads: RA9124TP, RA9TA, and RA9T. Based on Winchester's barrier tests for penetration and expansion, I don't see any advantage to the +P and +P+ loads, the RA9124TP & RA9TA. Performance of the 147-grain RA9T is on-par with the two hotter loads without as much "flash & bang".

Anything I'm missing? Anyone have personal experience with these loads to share?

Well, Ive shot them all and still carry the +P+ 127's. They may not be the best for everyone, they are hard to find and expensive. But I want the nastiest 9mm load on the face of the planet in my carry guns and from what Ive seen and shot, simply put they are it! They will continue to be my round of choice.

The are accurate to a fault, feed in every 9mm I have and turn my little 9mm's into a 40 in terms of ballistics.

"Based on Winchester's barrier tests for penetration and expansion, I don't see any advantage to the +P and +P+ loads"..........what do you really expect from the Manufactures data????
LEA's who carry the Rangers are gonna carry the +P+........most people stay away from the 147gr as even with expansion they can overpenetrate more than the other bullet weights.
Check out actual gel testing like GoldenLoki or Ammo Lab, thats not done by the OEM.

Shoot well.

I've put a couple hundred RA9T through my P35.
It is low recoil/low flash, quick for follow-up shots, flawlessly reliable, great terminal ballistics.

When I get my CCW permit it will most definitely be my carry load.

I have been having a hard time finding it lately since pro-load went out of business. They were my source. Where are you guys finding it?

You're not missing anything. When it comes to JHPs more velocity isn't always better, in fact exceeding the velocity the bullet is designed for can cause the bullet to come apart. The RA124TP load expands a bit better but unless you're carrying a pretty big gun like a Ruger or something it's probably not worth the extra muzzle blast.

The gap between the 147 and the 127+P+ closed tremendously since the production of the T-Series bullet. The 124+P is still a new offering but it seems to be getting some of the market share that used go to the Gold Dot +P and Golden Saber +P.

I prefer the 147 Ranger T load to the others for the same reasons you state. Although you can use the higher pressure loads in your G17 without as much concern for wear on the gun as other makes, it's still easier to operate the pistol with the standard pressure load and you can feel more confident that your round will have adequate penetration to get where it needs to go. If over penetration with missed shots was a major concern due to where you lived, I'd recommend the 115+P+ load.
