So I'm in the market for a new pistol and have narrowed it down to a few good name brands the Ruger sr 22, the Walther p22 and the Taurus tracker in .22. The price is about the same for all three new so I assume it would be the same used. I just want to know your personal experiences withe them to maybe help me decide.

P.S.) I know the tracker is a revolver and this is the auto loading section; I just had to throw it in there to tickle my fancy a bit. I don't own a revolver yet and I think it looks pretty cool.

P.P.S.) I'm new to shooting so please dumb down your technical specs as much as possible.

The Tracker does look good. I'd like to have one, as I do like revolvers. To me, the Ruger SR22 and the Walther are just too much like other guns I own, and like others in general. They're great pieces indeed, but I just like the "heritage" behind a good, solid wheelgun, particularly for the trail.

Got the SR22, it's a nice refined plinker but nothing special. I would pick the Tracker with the 6.5 inch barrel. It'll milk more energy out of that little round and will also improve your trigger control.

BTW, I'm pretty sure the P22 is made from Zamack. It's also only a Walther by name. Umarex makes the gun. Yup, the airsoft gun company . . .

I would go with the tracker, although it is quite heavy. I have a Taurus tracker 455 in 45acp(which I love) and the 22 tracker is heavier.

I would go with the Ruger SR22 between the three choices. Seems to be fairly well made from quality materials and Ruger has excellent CS should you have a problem with your gun. I had a Walther P22 and it had to be cleaned every 100 rounds or so to keep it running. The trigger was somewhat rough and gritty and that was right out of the box. Had to take the barrel extension off and replace it with a shorter length barrel as the extension kept coming loose and falling off. Accuracy was only so-so as frequent stopages made it hard to get a feel for any consistency in terms of accuracy. I have checked out Taurus revolvers on frequent occasions over the years and still haven't found one yet that I want to spend my money on.

I would ask: what is your goal? Do you want an accurate .22 or just a plinker? The general consensus on .22 pistols is that the Browning Buckmark or the Ruger MK-series are the best choices for value and accuracy and reliability. I would definitely consider the Buckmark and Rugers or at least shoot them if you can before you purchase. Both the Buckmark and the Ruger will be more accurate than you are. The same is not true of the 'tacticool' .22 designs.

If I were buying a .22 pistol for accuracy, target shooting, or small game hunting, I would look for a used Ruger MKII with the 5 1/2" bull barrel and adjustable sights.

Onward Allusion, thanks for bringing that to my my attention. :banghead: I liked the look of the walther but Nice to know. And for everyone I appreciate your responses, now it's just between the ruger and the either a Taurus 990 or tracker. As for the mk II I just can't get past the looks I'm not too keen on it. And for those who asked accuracy is not a huge issue, it will be mainly a plinker and a cheaper training piece than my 45.

EDIT: the 990 may be the same gun I was looking at.

What kind of 45 do you have? I'd get a 22 that's most like your 45 if you use your 45 for HD/SD. I like and have 1911's in 45 so I have a GSG 1911 in 22. Had a Ruger MKIII 22/45 and it was fine, but to me it was unique from any of my other guns and served no training purpose. Plus, I dreaded having to clean it, so I never did. Of the 3 you mention, I'd prefer the Taurus for just plinking out back.

My carry gun is an XD45 Compact and my training gun is a 4-1/2" threaded bull barrel Ruger Mk.III 22/45 because it most closely matches the weight and ergonomics of my carry gun. I suggest you purchase the 22 pistol that most closely matches the point of aim and control locations of your carry gun as that will maximize it's training value.

My wife has the SR22. It is a simple fun shooter. Easy 5 sec. break down for cleaning. Hers' will feed from CCI Stingers to standard target rounds. It is light and accurate. Comes with 2 sizes of slip-on grips.

I know nothing of the Tracker.

I have a sig 227. Which is great I love it. But the closest thing to it in .22 is the mosquito which sounds ok, BUT I have also heard a lot and I mean A LOT of bad things about it so the mosquito is a no no. Also, by training I mean more of a marksmanship training just to get the basics down to muscle memory type thing not really SD/HD carry training. When that need arises I'm pretty sure ill just use my 227 so that I'm 100% sure how it functions and where everything is at all times; However that's just my personal opinion.

I picked up a Sig Mosquito for my first 22 training pistol it's picky on ammo. It only shoots standard or sub sonic when suppressed, but regular range ammo has to be high velocity. Otherwise does just fine. I ended up buying one for my dad although he much rather would have had a Smith and Wesson 22a that my sister made off with. Now I have moved on to wanting something that is a little nicer and had a very hard time picking between a Volquartsen Scorpion and a Ruger 22/45 LTE. I loved the feel if the LTE but never could find one in stock, so I ordered a custom Scorpion. Go figure the local shop started getting in the LTE's a week before the Scorpion showed up. I don't regret spending the money as the Scorpion is a dream to shoot, although I probably would have been almost as pleased with the LTE. In my opinion the LTE is well worth difference in cost from a MKIII.
