Hey folks I was hoping to gain some insight here. For years I have been toying with the idea of building or buying an AR-15 in all white instead of the standard black. Now I already have an AR in black, and an AK with the standard wood furniture, but is it possible to get a duracoating in white? I'm not even sure if there is a paint or coating similar to the one used for coloring "EBR's".

I'm aware of rifles painted in the desert camo, jungle camo, OD green and even the pink "Hello Kitty" motif. I ran the idea past a few gun buddies of mine and a few thought it might be a bad idea to try since apparently, and I have not verified this, that painting a firearm in a scheme to disguise it from being a firearm is illegal in CA. I wouldn't put it past this state for enacting something so stupid, but I'm not sure if it's true or not.

So what do you think? An AR-15 decked out in all white, while probably would be difficult to clean, would be pretty cool.

No reason why it can't be done with Durocoat. White rifles have been around a long time for winter camo .

As to the legal issue in CA, nothing would surprise me. Best check

That white DPMS is really cool, but It would sure stick out. My Rock River is OD, and that seems to fit in a little better. The white is definitely a novelty, and if you get/ make one, I would be prepared for a slow resale if it ever came to that.

You can get the annodize without any pigment in it. The annodize actually penetrates into the aluminum and provides a little surface hardness to it. If you can get one special ordered and tell them to not use any pigment in the annodize..be careful because sometimes it comes out a goldish tint similiar to the buffer of some manufacturers.

Duracoat would be fine, but this will be comparable on properly prepped metal parts for less cost and hassle:

It comes in white, btw.

And Krylon Fusion on the plastic parts will stick very well and is very durable for paint, although not quite up to Duracoat levels.

If it's type III hard anodizing, which is the strong preference for anything gun related, the pigment-free color will be a dull gray, with or without a slight gold tinge - it's not very close to white.

I take it you don't hunt coyotes or foxes in the winter, a white AR would be great for winter hunting in the snow...

You can't anodize in white. A clear anodize comes out the color of the metal or with a tint to that, but it doesn't come out white. That's because the ano is fairly clear(other than type III which has a tint) and as such you have a clear finish on a silver part, giving a silver color. It is a translucent finish as well when dye is added and when you dye it white, you see through to some of the metal and it turns out as a silver color.

What would be cool is kind of a white scaled, or snaked look.

I used to paintball and they do crazy stuff with anodizing, something like this:

Just a thought....this is alot cooler and it is ceramic. These guys do an outstanding job.

I think, when they say, painting to disguise that it's a firearm, I think they mean painting the muzzle orange to make it look like a toy.

Despite not being a big fan of camo schemes, I have always thought that arctic camo looked pretty good. Don't know that I would put it on an AR, but that's another story altogether.

:)
