So, a buddy says to me a month ago "ever been to whittington center?"
umm, no
Well, let's go
so, took a week off work and loaded up the truck and drove on down last week for 4 days and 3 nights of fun.
Loaded for bear doesn't really begin. You would never believe how much stuff you can fit into a F250 supercab. Better armed than some 3rd world countries might be one description.

So, we get there and well, THE PLACE IS HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1000 yard ranges, silleuotte ranges for pistols, 22's and rifles. And not small, like 50 to a 100 stations on each range. I mean HUGE. If you can't find something to do here, you need help.
So, day 2 did a bunch of sight in work and got everythign zeroed. Shot some .22 pistol silluoette (and no, i cannot spell that word). Then went over and abused the high power silluette range. (no one else was out there, I think we had to share the range with one person maybe 3 times the whole time, it was great. apparantly it's busy in the summer though)

We stayed in the competitor housing. I wouldn't do that again. Amazing how they can make concrete look like a mattrress. Raton has lots of hotels, that's what i would do when i go back.

Day 3 I did more high power iron work and then did some pistol work, then my buddy says "let's shoot skeet"
ummm, i've never shot a shotgun before.
You'll have fun.
ok
So, we use his over/under and the guy at the range (5 skeet ranges, 5 trap ranges, 1 sporting clays, 2 5 stand, like I said, HUGE) was very forgiving.
Ok, them birds are FAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They don't look that fast when you aren't on the line, but on the line FAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I shot a 7.
I don't think that's too bad for the first time ever.
Shot a 6 the 2nd time.
So, the range guy needs to take lunch and so do we, so after lunch, my buddy takes a nap and says "go ahead, use teh shotgun"
So, figuring I want to try something different, I want to try 5 stand.
I go down and there are 2 other guys shooting skeet. One guy is GOOD. shooting low 20's all the time, and another is shooting 10 to 12's and he obviously has shot before. (this makes me feel better about my 7)

So, they say come over and shoot skeet. I'm like, no I'll wait, I want to shoot 5 stand, I'll wait til you are done. 5 stand they say? What's that? The range guy explains it and they go "sweet, let's go do that" (because it's off season, there is only one range guy throwing, so you all have to agree what to do, or wait your turn, seems fair).
So, we line up, he explains it and we shoot.
HARD :what:
Dang challenging though
We finish.
The good skeet guy shot a 12, the other guy shot a 10 and I shot a 9.:what:
The range guy says "i shoot this every week in our weekly league and some guys there NEVER shoot a 9." Ummm, big head.
Anyway, a couple more rounds, and I"m totally hooked.
I need a shotgun
I need to find a skeet/trap range.
Anyway, Whittington was darn fun, well worth the trip.

Whittington apparently hosts some tactical classes too, courteousy of the Practical Shooting Academy.

I don't know anything about these guys, if they are good, etc. but I did pick up a flyer somewhere. It might be a nice range to take such a class at.
