Who else uses a .44 mag/spl for defense?

I carry most every day a 3" 629 in a Simply Rugged OWB. It has never had to be used on 2 legged ones but has taken many deer, some coyotes, rabid coons, one black bear [would not leave my bees alone], and dumb rabbits. It is very accurate and with a good holster it does not get in the way. I once in a while think of getting a lighter weight 44 but I am use to this one. Most of the time I carry 44 spl Silvertips and they are enough for what I need.

I have two 44 Specials I rotate as my EDC. The weapons are a Rossi 720 fixed sight 44 and a Taurus 431 fixed sight 44. Both have 3in tubes. Talk about reliable, smooth and good carrying weapons, these are them. I stoke them with the Blazer 200 grain Gold Dots.
Never a doubt in my mind as to the weapon or caliber being able to protect me. I do my job, they will do theres. As for practice, I roll my own.

The man ask a 44 MAGNUM question, and gets a bunch of 44spl. answers! :banghead:

I have carried one of my 44 mags for self defence for 4 legged critters. But, the only time i carried one for 2 legged critters is when i knew i'd get a long shot and couldn't carry a long gun, OR the long gun couldn't be carried in my hands...

I just don't need 44 magnum power/penetration, when i can carry something smaller/lighter/more managable that will do just as good of a job at, "across the room" distances.

I carried a 44 mag for about 15 yrs. before switching to a .357 mag.. But when I carried the 44, I had it loaded with H110 / 296 and Gold Dots. I still switch back and forth, now and then, depending on where I'm going.

I go back and forth between my Taurus M445 .44Spl and my Baby Desert Eagle .45. The Taurus is extremely light and very concealable, but only has 5 rounds. The Baby DE .45 is steel, quite a bit heavier and bigger but carries 10 rounds in the clip and 1 in the chamber. Both 44Spl and 45ACP have roughly the same muzzle energy and I am a fan of both calibers. I carried a Charter Arms .44Spl Bulldog for about 10 years before I was made an offer on it I couldn't pass up and I sold it. Of course, I missed it badly afterward and ended up buying the Taurus M445, which I like a lot.
When carrying, I load the M445 up with Blazer 200gr JHP's (those have cavernous hollows on them!) and use Hornady +P 230gr XTP's in the Baby Desert Eagle .45ACP (those have some kick!).

My EDC is a sub compact 1911, but I have been known to carry these on occasion.

Top: Ruger SP101 .357.
Bottom: Ruger Alaskan .44Mag. Loaded with 200gr Hornady XTP JHP, on top of 10 grs of Unique.

Not EDC but I carry my trusty Ruger Redhawk 7.5 with me when I travel.

I'll load it with my 240 JHP's, these days XTP's atop H110 Powder.

It's heavy on the hip but that's just tough.

If I have to do urban duty, I'll have my Glcok 22 in 40 or 357 Sig, 17 rounds of serious firepower under my left arm in my Uncle Mike's.

A friend has my old S&W Model 27 that was bored out to .44 Special because the Model 24 was out of production. She uses it as a home defense gun and it is loaded half and half with Glaser Safety Slugs and Winchester Silver Tips. The Glasers up first for the roommates' and neighbors' safety and the Silvertips if the Glasers don't work.

I carried with either Silver Tips or whatever lead SWC I had loaded recently when I still had it. I generally carried in a belt pouch but occasionally on the belt, more often still in a vehicle glove box.

I took it to Germany for my last tour there and it did turn some heads. I some times dropped it in my briefcase when I had payroll officer just to keep that 150 grand in cash company and as a "New York Reload" to back up my .45 ACP.

A buddy usually carried a Charter .44 Bulldog with 200 grain Speer HPs in hot hand loads. He generally practiced with factory level lead bullets of one shape or another though for fear of beating the little gun up. After he passed on and I had a chance at his guns I did not pick it, but it seemed tight as ever.

I am much heartened by the mention of CA bulldogs. The small size of the gun, light weight, and large bore attracted me from the get go. I have always carried 240 gr SWCs in mine. That is what I cast, and I always have them on hand. For you guys who use Gold Dot HPs, do they reliably expand? I seldom buy jacketed bullets, but I will definitely give them a try if they expand.

My nightstand, and if I need serious CC handgun is one of the first run of the 44 Mag Mountain Guns from the 1980s. Due to lawyering things in our courts it is usually not loaded with reloaded ammunition. At this time it has 4 210 Win. Silvertips first and 2 Black Talons last. Many times I violate the lawyer rule and have a mixture of 44 Specials in it. The Crimson Trace grips aren't as pretty as some custom wood that I have but do probably have a deterrent factor built in. They also are pretty much point of aim to 30 yards. I loves my 44s!:)
