Hi I honestly hope I know a few things about Marlins, and just as a follow up...

Porting is definately an asset. I can assure you, having shot or heard hundreds of rounds being shot through them, INDOORS, that the ports are not noticeably louder. They make a huge difference in muzzle jump...especially when shooting the real hot loads like the 457 WWM and the 50 Alaskan..

If you are going to scope your rifle and use a scout system..dont scrimp..buy the Leopold...

I also suggest you install a decelerator pad...

This is one of the rifles on my ever expanding list of guns to buy. :D A buddy of mine has the guide gun and he loves it, very accurate and the recoil isn't bad.

The guide gun was actually tested up here a couple years ago by some of the higher ups at Marlin, my step-dad guided them up here, I'll have to dig up some of the pics and post them. :D

I don't own one, but my dad has THREE of them.

One stainless and ported. Noisy, but fun.

One full length rifle with a tang sight, unported. Heavy, don't much like the tang sights. Very accurate.

One 100 year edition 1895 with a french grey receiver and engraving, half magazine, very very nice rifle. Steel butt plate will get your attention though.

Only thing I dislike is the safety that allows you to still drop the hammer. Yuck. My old 336 didn't need one of those.

As an update to my last post, I've been shooting my GG with the Sierra 300gr JHP using a below max load of IMR4198. I haven't chrono'd them yet but the load is a bit above 2000fps in the manual from a 24" bbl.

Kick is about like a 6lb. 12ga with 3" Brenneke slugs, stout. Accuracy was three rounds in one hole at 25 yds while sighting in and two rounds touching with the third about 2" low at 100 in very poor conditions. I've put the Wild West Guns ghost ring sight on it, at first I was disappointed that there were no screw adjustments on the sights as it uses set screws to jam the windage and elevation against a dovetail. But after sighting in they're very secure, give a great sight picture and you could probably beat a Kodiak bear to death with the sight and not lose zero. This sight isn't shooting loose, and after I get sighted in I'm using a bit of locktite and never going to worry about it again.

This rifle continues to please me and with the 405 gr Remington loads it brought a great big grin to my 14 year old son's face. The only problem may be getting it away from him when we're at the range. I may have to buy a second one:banghead:

Happy shooting:D

You may be sorry you asked, I paid $373.61 out the door during their year end sale.

It's a great gun, hope you find one.

Rick
