Does anyone here use their SAR, WASR, or STG-2000 as their serious goto gun, such as home defense? or SHTF?

If you don't, do you think it is not capable of surviving a carbine course or other stringent event.

If so what is you load out(tools, magazines, and/or optics) and accesories for this, and what load do you carry?

I have an SAR-1 and a Romak III. The SAR has a dust cover mounted red dot with the pistol grip forearm and my SHTF mags are loaded with Norinco steel core ammo. The Romak III has an 8X42 scope with 1200 meter range finder built-in (sighted in for 200 and beyond), a laser for shots under 150 yds, and the ammo of choice is light ball armor piercing. Not much need for a home defense gun here, but my rifle of choice for nuisance animals (bobcats, coyotes, feral dogs, and feral hogs) is my DPMS LR-308.

Yes.

2002 model SAR-1 with a Kobra optic. If you were going to drop me into a Katrina type situation, that'd be the carbine I'd want. I shoot USPSA with that setup, and have gotten reasonably competent with it.

That's a 20-round Hungarian tank-crew magazine in the photo, which makes the rifle handier (it's about the same length as a standard 30-round AR magazine).

I have one of those 4-mag eastern-bloc belt pouches (the canvas type that has the fold-over flap). Loaded, it is way too heavy for a belt, so I put a shoulder strap on it and use it like a Suarez-style mag bag. In a pinch, one mag could be replaced by a cleaning kit and spare batteries for the optic.

I will most certainly facedown a carbine class. My Wasr runs just fine after a couple thousand rounds (many of those being mag after mag, my usual load out of 6).

My Hungarian sidebag (always with my trunk monkey :D) holds 5 and one hanging off the weapon. The only parts I like to use (other than the ones the gun came with to keep it legal) are originated from Com bloc countries. Nothing western (other than ammo) part will ever touch my gun. The best addition was a Bulgarian bolt head w/firing pin spring. Keeps the slamming down and doesnt dimple primers when you are just loading.

Generally speaking, the communist rifle in its simplest stock form is the best. Ive seen nothing but issues with aftermarket parts/mags/etc...

I have a Romak II 5.45x39 that I've converted to an AK-74 clone. Its got a Kobra site on it and I do shoot it a fair amount.

I've got a WASR-10 that has taken over 1200rds in a weekend without a cleaning. It doesn't have any add-on or optics, and other than some cleanup and internals polishing, it's the way it came out of the box. I do have it in a locked case with 7 loaded magazines, and wouldn't hesitate for a minute to use it in a SHTF sitation. I don't use it for HD for penetration concerns.

benEzra... every time I see that rifle, I want it again. So nice.
Thanks!

SAR's were actually among the cheaper AK's on the market when I bought it, but it's a nice one. I could have gotten one at a gun show for $325, but this one was hanging on the wall of my local gunshop with a 40-round RPK magazine for $379, and looked good.

I like the Hungarian 20-round magazines, too.

Yes- SAR-1 because it has never jammed on me, ever. I've put it through all types of abuse and it will always fire.

I will be using a converted Saiga as a go-to since it is more quickly loaded than a shotgun (I have a 'guns must be unloaded' rule in my house out of personal safety habits and parents' request)

I would use my romy G for some crazy "S" if it "HTF". I have shot 500 rounds through mine without a malfunction and without cleaning. I am not planning on cleaning it either. I have about 1600-1700 more rounds of romy surplus here so I will consider cleaning it after that is gone. Oh and I DO need a red dot because the sights on it are "S"!

I wouldn't use it for home defense though, I have a .45 for that. I do keep some loaded mags around though, in case some Taliban fighters take over my town.

Why, the Romanians do, of course! Except they have the happy switches on theirs.

My SAR-1 is my go to SHTF rifle. If I have to defend my property line after a hurricane this gun is what I will have in my hands.

I do. my ROMAK is my fall back weapon if i don't have access to my XD.

This is "Lola" right after I adopted her. She has some mods to her now and more to come.

My AK is always loaded - i pity the person who is on the business end of this gun. Plus, it makes liberal piss in their pants.

Not a Romak, but I do have an Arsenal SLR-101. It replaced my SAR-1,which was my SHTF rifle. My only gripe is that it doesn't have the cleaning rod mounted to the weapon itself. Not that I ever expect to hit the road and head to the hills with it,but a minor point of contention nonetheless.

I also have a Commie 4-mag belt pouch that I rigged a sling to so it can be carried on my shoulder. Not nearly as tactical as most of the AR gear out there, but it will do in a pinch I suppose. The likelihood of a drawn-out running firefight at my location is pretty slim anyway. ;)

Got a couple of WASR-10's that I do take seriously enough to use as a SHTF weapons...not JUST those BTW but wouldnt hesitate to use them if 'necessary'.

I think the second part of your question is the real benchmark, since outside of a structured training environment (be it a class, or getting your chops up for some sort of gun games), what "hard use" even constitutes is an open question, and is going to vary from person to person.

My wife's WASR is ultra reliable and so is my AES-10B ( romy rpk) and my romy G ak pistol. The ak design is pretty basic and reliable no matter which country it comes from.

WASR-10 GP with Aimpoint on a Ultimak rail. Its set up for co-witness, should the battery die on me. There are a few more mags now, and I try to pick up one or two when I find them...but I rarely remember. I have the dual mag pouch that came with it, but sometime I am hoping to get something that can hold a few more. AK.gif

My SAR 3 is my "if you could only have one gun" gun.

Accurate enough, absolutely reliable, and I have shot it enough to feel comfortable that I'll hut what I shoot at under most any condition.

And besides, nothing says "I WILL kill every single one of you before you have a chance to reconsider your poor choices" than an AK.

Whoa, Warren... have you elaborated on this in a seperate post? I'd like to hear more about it.

Hiya. I think I may have briefly mentioned it before-- but who knows....

Really there isn't a lot to tell. At the time, I had a wood stock SAR-1 and I used it as my "go-to" rifle.

In the 8 weeks of aftermath where we spent most of our days out working and getting dirty on a daily basis, the SAR-1 was never cleaned. However, it was used three times over that period, and it fired flawlessly.

Here's my observations on the SAR-1 that I had:

-- No long gun is the best choice for lugging around while doing work or clean-up. They get cumbersome and in the way all the time. You end up with two choices while using one: leave it in the truck nearby or leave it near a tree or something. Neither are great choices. I kept mine in the cab of my Jeep 90% of the time. It was much easier to keep my Glock 19 in a holster on my hip-- which I did on a daily basis.

-- My SAR-1 was never as accurate as I wanted it to be. It ranks as the least accurate of the AK's that I've owned-- the Saiga coming in first, followed closely by the Vector Polish AK, and then a Romanian G kit build. But for what I needed it to do, it did the job. I just wouldn't go to my SAR-1 if I was in a situation where I had to hunt with the firearm.
