Who hunts with old military rifles besides me?

I don't own a "deer rifle" in the sporting ideal. I've got an old Marlin 336, but havn't used it in a while. I use my M44 or FAL mostly, with my Saiga and Ishapore getting the nod occasionally.

I have a old spanish 7x57 mauser but it has a new barrel and a old custiomstock on it.shoots great.letting my daughter hunt with my underwood carbine this year.

Cosmoline,

Thank you for the advice. On the one hand, I intend to take care of it, will not take it on any rough hunts, and it will be treated gently. On the other hand, I am not interested in selling it and my guns don't hang on a wall :). I don't think taking it out on a nice afternoon to shoot a deer is unreasonable.

It is not sporterized, looks to be all-original, and even has the little manual and spare parts/cleaning stuff or whatever it is in the stock recess. It's a Walther production one, but the date code is under the stock, which I didn't know how to take off at the time. Unfortunately it did not have a magazine, and had been left without any care for quite some time. There is a fair bit of surface rust on various external parts and the action is gunked up pretty badly with attic crud. The bolt does move, but it took a little effort to get it open enough to make sure the gun wasn't loaded.

I have done a little reading about the G43/K43's and intend to clean the gunk out, oil it, and see how the bore is. If I can get it cleaned up well, I'll see about getting replacements for all the springs and gas piston (which I have read that you should do if you want to shoot one). I will certainly check over at the boards you linked to make sure it is safe to shoot and to make sure there isn't some reason that this particular rifle is somehow especially significant (which I doubt).

Took a small buck opening day with my 6.5 at 203 metres. Last year I used my SKS, every previous hunt I used the 38 Swede. I love that gun (1942 Husky). What are scopes for anyway?

Currently Kragging..

Shot a doe offhand with my 1903A3 and some HXP 30-06 early in the season.

Followed that up with a doe from a tower blind with P17 Eddystone and later a K98 Mauser bring-back that had a Lyman peep on the back. Currently carrying 1898 Krag.

Last year; 1909 Argentine Mauser Carbine in 7.65, Jap Type 44 6.5 X50. Swede M38 6.5X55, Swiss K31 in 7.5, Garand, M1 Carbine.

Didn't get all the doe tags shot last year and won't this year, but next up are the Krag, an SKS, Chilean 7X57 Carbine, Trapdoor Springfield. Might try an AR15 shorty.

Passed a big doe Friday evening with the Krag. Just too late, overcast and dim to get a good sight picture. It's barrel is full length but its been sporterized with a peepsight on the back. That's the only time I miss my Ruger #1 7X57 with Leupold....of course, in others hands, the Ruger killed three does this year so far. A kid might take his first deer with it later in the management season.

Everytime I bought an old military rifle my mental excuse was that I might shoot a doetag with it one day. Now I am.

I killed a nice buck a few years back with an Argentine 1891 Mauser Carbine, the engineers model with the extra sling swivels. Got a couple of those.

I took my enfield hunting but was too heavy so I carried my uncles .223 for half the time.

Milsurps...

Shot my very first deer w/a sporterized 1917 Enfield. Shot several others since with a sporterized '03-A3. Last years' deer was with a sporterized Swede Mauser.

This years' hunt was with a Yugo Mauser that I sporterized myself.

My brush gun is now a DCM .30 Carbine. It came sporterized--what could you possibly do to an M1 Carbine that would make it lighter and handier???

My first high power rifles were a spoterized SMLE and an M1 Garand. The SMLE shot a small bear, the Garand shot a few deer. Not being able to see my sights in low light conditions pissed me off, even though I loved shooting the Garand. After I had to pass on a 5x5 whitetail buck (see above problem) I went out and bought my tikka 30-06 with a 2.5 to 10X bausch& Lomb 4200. Nine years later, that rifle is so good I don't hunt with anything else, but I am always tempted to sporterize something and put on a good scope.

I have used an SKS on a deer hunt, but it wasn't my first choice -- couldn't get my buddy's .243 to hit anything reasonably, so my 3-4 MOA SKS was the better choice.

Usually, I have hunted deer with my Hawken.

My K31 will be hunting sometime in the next few years -- we have a real fun time getting tags out here, so I'll either be travelling to hunt, or waiting.

Most of the time, I'm using a 20 guage on quail. No tags for those. :D

I purchased a sporterized Mauser 98 this year from a gun store in Washington state. It had been sporter-ized a long time ago from the looks of it, re-chambered in 30-06 with what appears to be a 1903A3 barrel.

I took two doe's with it this year!

Yep...

Use my one and only rifle right now

Nagant sporter. :)

My brother has a 303 British, and some 8mm war gun that he always brings on the annual elk hunt. My Dad reloads the 8mm for him too. From what they've told me, one or both guns were shot so much in the war that all the rifling has been shot out. Can't imagine that they could be too accurate that way, but who know.

Myself?
I'm dying to get a hold of a mosin nagant of some sort. Feel sort of embarrassed to go shopping for them with intentions to mount a scope on it.

My wish...
An almost unused, unmodified, relatively inexpensive mosin nagant that I can mount a scope onto and use for deer and elk. I'd just like to have an all original antique with a scope. Would end up giving it to my son so that he can abuse the thing and have a firearm to hunt with.

I like hunting with my Ruger M77 .270 though.
