Auditory Exclusion

I do not worry about hearing damage during Self Defense situations. There is a police term called Auditory Exclusion which tries to define why there is no temporary hearing loss in a short gunfight. Seems to be related to Stress and i personally find gunfights to be stressful.

It's the same thing when your hunting and the big buck jumps up in front of you. No hearing loss even if you fired a couple of time with that high power rifle. But fire just once on the range without hearing protection and your ears have shut down.

If the noise is going to last a long time as in a military situation or being around larger guns (cannon) then Hearing Protection is a must. A home defense situation is going to be full of stress and generally not long lasting. I choose not to worry about it.

Would a couple unprotected shots be another nail in the long term hearing loss box? Probably, but there are already lots of nails added over the years anyway. Guess it does not hurt anything to pack a pair of muffs in your tac bag if you have room but I would not loose any sleep over this issue or time putting them on.

Auditory exclusion refers to the way the mind prioritizes sensory input during a stressful situation. It simply renders you temporarily unaware of sound, or more to the point, unable to determine the meaning of the sound or remember that it happened. But the sound waves themselves are still impacting your eardrum. The pressure waves caused by explosions, such as close gun fire, still damage your ear even if auditory exclusion makes you unaware of it.

No. I think the need to have all of your senses operating as best they can before a possible shooting outweighs the desire to shield oneself from discomfort or even harm from the loud noise.

Of course, but if a person is using electronic/active ear pro, one could argue that their hearing is enhanced. No way I'd throw on a pair of passive muffs, though...

Regardless of if you did or did not "hear' your shot, you still can suffer some level of damage. Outside, it's fine. But have you ever discharged a firearm without ear pro indoors? Depending on the firearm, there is a very high likelihood that all you hear from there is ringing...

I like music more than I like guns.

I will do EVERYTHING in my power to ensure that I can continue enjoying music to it's fullest for as long as possible so I double up on protection at the range and keep a pair of noise-cancelling muffs on my nightstand.
If I had a gun that could accept a suppressor I'd get one of those too.

Me too... otherwise the money spent on guitars will be a waste! lol.

As I've gotten older and my hearing has deteriorated, I've become more dependent on electronic hearing protection.

They really give you an advantage when trying to determine if there is somenoe else in the house and where they are. In LE, they are a godsend for commercial building searches

You're mistaking not noticing the sound vs. not being damaged by it. Ragnar is on target and the idea that hearing isn't damaged because your mind is occupied is one of those absurd myths that needs to die.

BTW, yes, I do keep hearing pro at hand because using electronic muffs enhances my hearing while protecting it.

Due to PTSD related issues, I sleep wearing ear plugs. A louse fart in the next county will wake me up without them. My dogs barking and whatnot wakes me up with them. I can still hear pretty well with them in, it blocks certain levels of sound and muffles the rest. I'm pretty sure I could still respond with my HD weapon if I needed to, and still keep my hearing (whats left of it).

At the range by myself - plugs and muffs
At the range instructing or shooting with other people - electronic ear muffs or plugs

If I have to use my HD handgun or shotgun for its intended purpose on a verified real life threat ear pro is the last thing on my mind. My mind is on solving a tactical problem before it solves me.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr
