It's not a 696.
Yes, it's a 5 shot, but
It's ported and hammerless.

Possibly a performance center J-frame 640 ?

It's a Performance CEnter 640 J Frame firing 38s. Grips are either Eagle Secret Service or Ahrends. From the finish and the color my money is on Eagle Grips.

Whatever it is....it sure looks like it gets in the way of ejected shells just like the Badger Boot Grip on my SP-101. Probably blocks out any speedloader use like them too. I'm not complaining...I don't carry extra ammo anyhow.....just mentioning for anyone who would consider it an issue.

Oh I don't know...

The cases have completely cleared the cylinder so it looks like the grips aren't too much in the way.

If you point the muzzle skyward and work the rod sharply you can clear almost any grips.

Looks like a speedloader would also work OK with them. The don't appear to interfere any more than Pachmayrs do.

Looks like a 640.

The grips, based on profile and the curve of the cut on the top, are definitely by Ahrends, probably Cocobolo for wood. I've owned several sets of Ahrends and they have a distinctive profile.

4 cases are clear, the fifth is hitting the grips. You have to eject, shake, rotate, eject again. The ejector star traps it against the grip...probably even binds the rod. I will almost garantee a speedloader won't work.

I think they are Eagle. I have never seen Ahrends that weren't sealed well and finished better than those.

I agree with prisoner and Moonclips. These look like Ahrends. The have a distinctive ridge on the fingergrooves where the Secret Service grips from Eagle are smooth. Also, the speedloader cutout is fairly distinctive on the Ahrends (although I have seen one picture of an Eagle set that was very similar...but not the finger grooves).

The wood may be cocobolo, or but I think it is moradillo (an option I think only Ahrends offers) due to the chocolate color and the lack of lighter colored striations.

As far as not being finished and sealed, I read an archived post when I was grip shopping that said Ahrends would send them unfinished on request...but I have no first hand knowledge.

I have both and those are the Ahrends grips. They are flatter than the Secret Service and the bottom finger groove is a little more dramatic.

Personally, I prefer the Secret Service grips.

They could be modified further to clear...

Plenty of room left on those grips for clearance cuts. Note the wide-open space on the Altamont grips for my 696 - no problems with the rounds hitting the wood:
