Who knows their FALs?

Well, GSI is still in business. No FN's though. Now they're selling high end German double rifles and Johannsen large bore rifles, hand built Spanish shotguns and commercial HK rifles and handguns. www.gsifirearms.com
Here's a decent site for info on FAL's in general and an explanation of how to tell the difference between an inch and metric mag. http://www.rawles.to/FAL_FAQ.html

That sure is a beautiful rifle. I picked up a DSA built STG58 about a year ago and its quickly becoming my favorite rifle. I am sure you will enjoy that FAL for years to come.

Nice gun. I like my FAL even though it's the more mundane fixed stock version.

Not sure if I would be posting about how I violated state (CA) and federal law buy making an out of state, private-party gun purchase, though. Not that I wouldn't do it, mind you, I just wouldn't talk about it in public.

Point taken, although I really don't give a rat's ass about CA's unconstitutional laws, and I'm not aware that I violated any federal laws since it is a long gun.

I'm not sure here but a few points.

It is a real FN receiver
I think that the Para stock was either added later, the reason I say this is your receiver is a Type I and you Para Lower is a Type 2.

Not that any of the above really matters. It is a nice looking rifle and a piece of history. Take good care of it.

Looks all the world like a Type 3 receiver to me.

Yeah, I'd really like help ID'ing the reciever type. I'm going to take some close-ups tomorrow so maybe you guys in the know can help me out.

Just got the mags for the gun. Is there any sort of ammo sensitivity in FALs? I know they have some sort of adjustable gas system, but is the chamber any sort of issue for match or surplus rounds?

With a "Gun South" importers stamp on the reciever (a Type III reciever, by the way), that's the clue that this gun was imported in the early 1980's. GSI imported both full length and para models at that time, and the para models came with both long and short style flash suppressors.

As such, it's NOT one of the FAL's that were imported by Browning in the 1960's that had the sear cuts for automatic fire in them that were "amnestied" by the ATF. Those guns are/were made on Type I receivers, and would not have GSI's name one them.

Yes, you did violate federal law. A non-resident may purchase a long gun only from a licensed dealer, private transfers are illegal. No handguns may be legally purchased by out of state buyers. So, by buying the gun in a private sale you violated both CA state law and federal law. In fact, you broke several state laws since this is a prohibited gun. I doubt that anyone will come looking for you over this, and the fact is that given the unholy number of ridiculous gun laws on the books at both the state and federal level I suspect that most gunowners break some laws from time to time with no criminal intent on their part. I would still refrain from posting this info in a public forum. If I were the moderator for this forum I would delete this thread just to be on the safe side.

But then, maybe that would be tampering with evidence? You can't win.

Here's my unworthy imitation (in the middle):

It's a DSA SA58 in 50:64 style. Great shooter.
