This thread got me wondering who out there makes/markets a 6.8spc upper (just the upper, not a whole rifle) in a 24" varmint style configuration?

as in a flat-top receiver, target crowned 24" barrel, free float tube (with bi-pod compatibility of some sort), no front sight.

I already have a lower that will be receiving a RRA 2-stage trigger soon, and would rather buy a new upper to put on it, rather than a whole new rifle.
but i can't find a 6.8 upper int eh config i want. one or two places i've seen have complete rifles with 6.8 SPC marked lowers, and the rest all seem to have only A3/M4 style uppers and rifles in 6.8spc.

anyone know of a good source of a 6.8 upper int eh config i'm thinking of?

P.S. without going to AR15barrels.com and paying enough to buy a rifle elsewhere.

I've been looking for the same. I found a couple of barrel makers, but quite expensive and I'd rather just buy a complete upper.
Several mfgs make 16" 6.8 uppers, but not much variety in that caliber.

Just noticed this thread:

The OP says he just bought a 6.8 24" upper off gunbroker, the mfg is <http://www.ratworxusa.com>
Their web site isn't that informative.

Why would you want something that long? 6.8 is a carbine round--diminishing returns really sets in after 18". Even if you handload, there isn't enough case capacity to take advantage of slower powders.

I wouldn't bet on that, I'm shooting a 26" heavy encore barrel in 6.8SPC. While I haven't maxed any loads out yet my START loads are typically as fast as the MAX loads listed in the manuals for a carbine length tube

6.8 is a carbine round

Only while Remington was trying to sell it to the DoD,

the 700 SPS in 6.8 has a 26" tube

like the 6.5 grendel in ballistics wise the round almost makes more sense in a bolt gun or similar with a longer barrel to milk as much velocity as possible, than it ever did in a carbine or even a 20" AR platform.

get right down to it, I might still wind up scrapping the new upper idea and build a short action savage in 6.8. (not near as likely though as i want my next savage to be a .308)

Fill me in on these long-barreled loads you're using.

I'm poking around in Quickload, and I don't think the extra 8 inches of barrel will get you more than another 200 fps.

Going from 18" to 24" with the hottest compressed H322 load I have ever used nets only a 52 fps gain. To me, that's a lousy trade-off.

The better bet, IMO, is to get a carbine barrel reamed to SPC II dimensions, and load the cartridge as it was originally intended.
