I've been looking into getting a rifle and was wondering who makes a better rifle,Ruger or Browning? The rifle will just be for hunting.

my vote goes for the CZ rifles.I bought one and love it..very accurate and in the same price range as rem/win or ruger.

Unlike receivers, triggers can be easily replaced or tuned. I'd personally pick a rifle based upon it's receiver design and how it handles and fits me, and tune the trigger to suit.

In the push-feed category, the Remington 700, Browning A-Bolt, Weatherby, Tikka, and Savage are all good. In the controlled-feed category, the CZs, Ruger 77 and Win 70 are good. From that list, you just have to handle 'em and find the one that fits you best and looks best to you.

Me personally? I'd probably pick a Win70 first just because I like CRF and I'm not partial to the cast receivers of the Rugers nor the stocks on the CZs.

Of the two, I'd pick the ruger. Browning has two major problems with the abolt II.

one - they glue the barrels in now, so the action is a throwaway. Yea maybe some heat may break the epoxy loose, but the whole idea of a throwaway rifle sucks.

two - they mill the sides off a perfectly good action, making it weak around about 40% of the front ring. Stylish yes, strong and stable, no.

The ruger is a better choice. basic design, good extractor, real safety. The downside is the receivers are very hard, so you run a risk of cracking them when rebarreling, but this is a rare occurance. Bedding is a bit more difficult with the front screw pulling at an angle.

I still like the Winchester as a box stock rifle better than the remmie. It has a real safety and a less complex/more reliable trigger design, plus a real extractor, not a sliver of sheet metal. The remmie is the small block chevy of the rifle world, but if you plan to pretty much leave it alone the winnie is the hands down better choice.

Why not consider a savage? I'd take one over the abolt ii and ruger any day of the week. pillar bedded/free floated from the factory, pull button rifled barrel, real safety, accutrigger option, accuracy right out of the box that will blow away all rifles mentioned above (when looking at the entry level rifles, not the premium remmies in the HS Precsion stocks).

Hope not to fuel a remmie versus the world flame war here, but you remmie fans need to face the facts about stock rifle to stock rifle. The remmie is a few rungs down on the ladder. And yes I own/have owned multiples of all aforementioned rifles sans the abolt, but had a few of these in pieces in my hands to know them as well.

Go with the Winchester M-70 CRF...as others have said...you can't beat whats been working for several years...and will continue.

Heck, find yourself a commercial Mauser...that would be a sweetheart. :)

Remington -

That's why the Rem 700 is the basis for the Army Sniper Rifle M24, the USMC M40, and numerous other custom rifles.

I have a Rem 700 PSS, and it is superb - just as it was right out of the box.

CZ great value for money. Sako if your pockets are a bit deeper. Sauer Take down rifle if you have very deep pockets.

Hope some of you guys never have to pass a really simple exam...like 4th grade reading comprehension. There are only two possible answers to the question posed.

off or on the subject

"NineHotel:" You had mentioned the Savage and the sheet metal extractor.
I like the Savage, but the one I examined at the gunstore had just that, and so I didn't buy.

I have the Ruger M77 with it's fine Mauser claw extractor, and believe that such an extractor was devised to be reliable when the gun was continuously fired and heated as with the military guns. Now, I may never use my rifle in that manner, however, I do like the reliability.

My BBR has the wimpier extractor too. Has anyone shot theirs' to produce enought heat to verify this phenomenon?

Then, the discussion is not about manufacturers, but proven design.

My 2 cents

I too, say go with the Ruger. I have owned both at one time or another. I like the safety position on the A-Bolt better, but you can find the older Ruger with the top mounted safety too. The 60 degree bolt throw on the A-Bolt is nice, but I still prefer the strength and controlled feed of the Ruger. All this being said, my current go-to hunting rifle is a Savage.

I vote for the CZ-550, best rifle I have ever owned. Sub 1 inch MOA @ 130 yds in 308W.

Again, of the TWO options I would chose Ruger. I have a Ruger M77 and it's been flawless. Of the 5 deer rifles I own, it's the pick of litter.

I have Rem, Win, Browning, and Ruger Rifles...

I like to play around with them and study the strengths and weaknesses of each design. My all time favorite is the Ruger M 77. It is bull strong, simple and they shoot great to boot. My Abolts are extreamly accurate, but I do not see them as a serious field gun. They are for the range and for hunting in situations that are controlled (pasture poddle shooting and general varminting).

I vote for the Ruger, install a Timney trigger and you are good to go anywhere.

James Thomas - you might want to take a closer look at the Savage extractor - it is the same basic design as the M70 push feed. It is a machined piece that slides laterally in a groove in the outboard bolt lug, held by a ball and spring in a detent. The Remmy is a thin sliver of sheetmetal set back in the inner perimeter of bolt head.

But the rest of us, some of whom are college-grads, a few with graduate degrees, are rebels thinking outside the box.

My answer is, included in "none of the above", is here.

Fat Pat;

Of the two choices you've given us, I'll say Ruger. But, I also have to ask the question as to why you're limiting yourself to those two rifles?

Many have made excellent suggestions as to available alternatives in today's market. Myself, I'll tell you to also look at the Tikka & CZ's. Remember, the more different one's you handle, the better chance you have of coming up with the right one.
