Who makes a good quailty, authenticly styled, flintlock...

I've just started shooting BP again, mostly to get ready for the hunting season.

But I was thinking I might get a flintlock for the local BP shoots. Who makes a good quality, authentically styled, flintlock that wouldn't be out place in a "Period" BP shoot. I'm thinking I would not want to spend too much so it would have to be in the under $1,000 range? The more "under" the better.

The Lyman GPR is probably the most commonly recommended rifle. Authentic styling, good quality, affordable, available in .50 or .54 (the one shown in the picture is a caplock, but they use that same picture for the flint models).
Great Plains Rifle

If you get a GPR, make sure you get the correct twist rate. It's available with a 1:32 twist for conicals (this version is called the Great Plains Hunter), or a 1:60 twist for patched roundballs (Great Plains Rifle). Also, the GPR gives you additional options. You can buy extra barrels for about $118-$125 each, so you can switch between .50 and .54 caliber, and you can switch twist rates to shoot balls or conicals/sabots. But you can't switch ignition systems (if you have a flintlock rifle, you can only use flintlock barrels on it, not percussion barrels, and vice versa). A common set-up is to have a slow-twist .54 or .50 for roundballs, and an extra .50 caliber fast-twist barrel for conicals/sabots, because more conicals and sabots are available in .50 than any other caliber.

The Lyman Trade Rifle is another popular one, also available in .50 or .54. Midsouth doesn't currently have the flint version in stock, but they can order one (about $260, I think). It only has one twist rate, 1:48, which is supposed to allow you to shoot both balls and conicals/sabots in the same barrel. But you can also buy extra barrels (about $95 each) to switch between the two calibers.

You said you might attend some "period" shoots. Keep in mind that your decision about which rifle to buy will be determined by just how PC you need to be.

The Dixie Gunworks Tennesee Mountain Rifle is very authentic and well under $1K. The locks on them are very good. I had a flint TMR and it would throw a huge shower of sparks even with an ugly, dull, flint.
