the title says most of it

im looking to build (or buy complete) a good shooting AR in 7.62x51 (.308)

i want something i can have a full rifle quad rail on (preferably one that lines up with the reciever rail) with a 20 inch barrel (suggest me a twist rate)
obviously a flat top because i want to scope it

and id like something reasonably priced in between say 1500-3000 (staying closer to the 1500 side as much as possable)

    anyone have any suggestions?

    anything i should avoid?

i was looking into DPMS but there SASS is a bit pricey but thats close to what i want

DPMS, POF, Armalite, KAC, Bushmaster, and RRA all make .308W AR-10s. Bushmasters and RRAs use FAL mags, and I think Armalite uses some kind of odd mag, can't remember.

If you want to mount something up front, you need a monolithic rail, otherwise, the slightest skew of the rail will make your POI be way off compared to mounting on the reciever.

They all make good ones! The question might be, who makes the best optics for a .308 AR platforme.

Depends on use, range, and expected conditions.

Yes the R-25's are made by DPMS and also good quality although I don't care for the camo wallpaper. Very happy with my DPMS AP4 16".

DPMS LR .308 TAC 20 (20 inch 1 in 10 twist and has the quad rail with free-floated heavy barrel). Removable carry handle. They run about $1300, they may be cheaper now that prices are coming down. I paid $980 + S&H for mine on Dec. 31st '08. I have 15 of the DPMS .308/7.62X51mm 19 rd. magazines. In fact the barrel on the TAC 20 is marked 7.62. Magpul will be coming out with actual 20 round magazines for under $20 a piece.

Bushmaster no longer makes a 308 AR. They sold their design to RRA.

Armalite uses a proprietary mag, which is a bit similar to an M14 mag. Reason? They came out during the AWB and could offer 20rd mags by converting M14 mags, which were then fairly available. Price of their mags today is fairly competitive with DPMS/Knight's/Original AR-10 type mags, as long as you buy direct from Armalite and preferably when they run their sales.

I haven't heard bad things about any of the AR-10 types above. My personal choice would be the Armalite, or possibly POF. But DPMS would cost you a lot less and they get good reviews also.

    Okay, good to know.

Intresting, I am guessing they had to mod them to get rid of the lock in stuff and put a hole in the side for a AR type mag catch?

    That's where they went.

Off Armalite's website, note the date and note that they're talking about Gen I mags, Gen II mags are a little different in design although Gen II AR-10s will work with Gen I mags

I have have an awesome Armalite and would recommend it to anyone who is going to shoot "Factory" ammunition. Armalite AR10 are setup tight for accuracy and can be frustrating to someone shooting surplus 7.62. I shoot Remington 150's in mine with no troubles and excellent accuracy. Good luck with you choice.
