I remember hearing that there were some firearms companies that made AR-15 type rifles in 7.62x39? Who are they?

There are a bunch of them. Model1sales has uppers or kits as well.

What are reviews on them? Are they well liked or are they just expensive AK's and SKS's?

I bought a Colt AR in 7.63x39 a few years ago.

My brother and a friend had one during the 90's but the only mags avalible at the time were modified AK mags that didn't work worth a crap. That alone kept me from buying one until I found out about C-Products 7.62x39 AR mags a few years ago. Now I couldn't be happier with platform.

I've also seen many companies advertise 7.62x39 AR uppers in the Shotgun News.

I believe that Krochus has one that he hunts with. He also has a lot of experience with what bolts to use because there are some problems with some of them out there. Contact him and you will get more than you need, and the right answers and why the wrong answers are wrong.

my buddy is building one.

apparently, the stripped lowers for the regular caliber are acceptable, and one need only get the right mags (easy) and the right barrel and uppers (expensive, per the usual for the platform but supposedly the accuracy makes it all worthwhile). He's using DPMS parts...

I want one in .243!

You'll need an AR-10 sized receiver for that one, though. That's why the 6.8 SPC, 6.5 Grendel, .50 Beowulf, 7.62x39, etc. are popular - they employ a standard 5.56mm-sized lower receiver.

Years ago I had a factory Colt 7.62x39. It never gave me any problems, though the crates of Wolf ammo I put through it certainly did dirty it up!

I'm running a 30 round C-Products now, it feeds fine unless the lower has slack that allows the front of the mag to tip down. Trying to find a better fix than layers of duct tape, maybe little pads of JB Weld filed to fit?

Delton makes a 7.62 upper, but yeah I think mags are the biggest deciding factor here, reliabilty, availabilty, and then some people say there are extractor issues. But for the price of an AR upper chambered in 7.62 that's the same cost of an AK now a days. So might as well get a complete AK for the price where there are thousands of mags available.
