I wear glasses and I just got back from Lenscrafters.

New lenses for old glasses ($340), new lenses for spare glasses = ($215),
new sunglasses (lenses and frames) = ($375), and eye exam = ($80)

Total cost = $1,010 :what:

By contrast, NIB Zeiss VM 1.5x6x42 = $1,200. Or NIB Swarovski PH 1.5x6x42 = $1,200. Or Kahles 1.5x6x42 = 800.

I buy new glasses every two or three years. The above scopes Each last a lifetime and retain 80% of their value after 2 or 3 years.

So don't anybody tell me how damn overpriced you think premium German optics are. They seem like a damn bargain to me! :cuss: :banghead: :fire:

You might have missed my central point which is, life is so damn expensive why not scope our rifles with premium scopes? What do you gain over a lifetime by saving a few hundred dollars on a once-in-a-lifetime investment. To heck with Leupold (although they are a terrific value), I'm getting Zeiss glass.

I learned the hard way that you also really get what you pay for with spotting scopes. I went the cheap route. Would have been easier to just put a match to my money. It was junk. I've heard a lot of competitive shooters whose opinions I respect say that there are things you can cut some corners on, but with optics, you always get what you pay for.

Excellent point. I hadn't considered the price of the "optics" I use every day in comparison to the price of my sporting optics. My "spectacles" cost similarly, but my insurance picked up about 2/3 - now if I could only get them to pick up 2/3 of a Zeiss scope and a Svar binoc for me...

Jimbo, you need to figure some travel costs into your equation. A buddy of mine recently got new glasses; bifocals. I don't recall if he got new frames, but the prescription and lenses were $60. He went to Ojinaga, Mexico, across the river from Presidio, Texas. FWIW, the lenses were ground in El Paso. Took about a week for delivery.

My trifocals have been running in the $200 range, this side of the river, re-cycling my frames. A "shooting lens" at the upper inside corner for my master eye is another $30 or so. (Ground to the middle correction of my trifocals, objects at arms' length are clear--like pistol sights when in a Weaver stance, or irons on a rifle.)
