Do you use a mixture of ammo brands/types in your defensive magazines? How and why?

I used to "dutch load".

My strategy was two deep hollowpoints and two FMJ to get a nice combination of penetration and expansion.

I gave it up because I realized that a goot shot in the right place is more important than anything else and it seemed a little silly.

No. I use all of one brand and load per magazine, speed loader and or cylinder.

Most justifications for mixing ammunition are dubious at best in a civilian self-defense scenario, and in a semi-auto, can lead to misfeeds.

Ah Yes! A wise man indeed. I get a kick out of dubious night sights in a real gun fight as well. What ever happened to point and shoot. Did that go the way of proper spelling, penmanship and the Lords Prayer in this modern age as well?

I've considered alternating between 1 JHP and 1 FMJ. I figure every target is going to get 2 rounds, and here in Michigan thick clothing and/or excessive body fat content is no out of the question. The JHP round is great for expansion, but the FMJ would have more of a chance for maximum penetration if the target were thicker than expected. Anyone think this is a terrible idea? Btw, I carry a G19.

Teddyb...What does night sights have to do with the OP's question?

No...Absolutely not. One brand of quality ammunition. In my case Federal .45 ACP cases, CCI-300 primers, 7.8 grains of WSF. Topped off with a 185 grain hornady HP/XTP...

Now just what is the likelihood of you getting in a gun fight. I can tell you from experience the handgun is what you go to after the Mossberg 12 gauge pump is empty of # 1 buckshot.

The best gunfight is the one that never happens and there are just too many ways for privates citizens to avoid one. Walking away is a great idea and saves lots of money on lawyers as well.

You also don't have to worried about what super duper ammunition you are loaded with. I have no idea how we ever managed to will all those wars with out computer designed hollow point bullets and super duper primers, smokeless environmentally safe clean burning powders night sights and all the other stuff be gobbled up by gun owners today!

There shouldn't be a gun fight if one is able to just walk away. Ones life isn't threatened very much if one may walk away.

Well now that idea of your's works great in your home, but in the real world outside your home I doubt you will be carrying a 12 gauge riot/defense shotty. You are starting to make us feel like you are anti-selfdefense when in public. And yer from Tennessee too. What gives?

That is why, as a Tennessean, I carry an AK-47 pistol with a 30 round magazine. and one in the chamber. You never know what you're going to come across. I'd use non corrosive ammo, because once the cops confiscate it after the self defense shooting it probably won't get cleaned for a long time. I'm kinda torn though because I've been thinking about loading every third round with AP.

Right now my 1911 just has cheap Wal Mart Whitebox hollowpoints in it. Those will get upgraded to 230 grain Hydra Shocks once I start getting 40 hour paychecks again.

My CZ-75 has 6 rounds of +P Blue Glasers on top of 10 rounds of Gold Dot hollowpoints. Although, that has more to do with being in school at the time and not being able to afford a full mag of Glasers :p.

I was born and raised in the north east corner of Missouri in a town called Cameron. After Vietnam I worked for over 20 years as a police officer, at various rank levels in very large metropolitan police department before going to the Feds and retiring.

I take insult to your impudent snark at Tennessee. Tennessee has the best citizen handgun carry laws in the nation that I fully support. It is a " Handgun Carry Permit" You can carry any handgun you own or buy without re qualification and it does not require the weapon to even be concealed if you desire.

With the TICS system that takes about 10 minutes to do a handgun purchase. Every member of my family carry handguns for protection, we just don't get carried away with idea.

There is a Mossberg 500, 18 inch open chocked barrel in my trunk at all times. First 3 rounds #1 buckshot and the last two slugs.

“It’s just a tool box. You pick the tool for the job.” -Sam from Ronin

"It's just a gun it does not define you as a human being. Don't make a bigger deal out of it then it needs to be. It just a tool."

My thoughts exactly! It just a tool, no need to make it glow in the dark or wrap tape around the handle either. That is not going to make the tool work any better in my experience and opinion. That said, if you want to paint it pink and slap bacon grease on yours that is your prerogative. I can only speak for me and that is all I do.
