Will be passing through MO. in Feburary. Plan on making a stop at the Sierra plant in Sedalia MO, and pick-up some 2nd hand bullets.
Anybody else done the same?

I visited their plant almost 3 years ago. I have to say I was genuinely interested in the manufacturing techniques, and the company store was just a nice added attraction.

I would not plan to expect that any particular caliber would be available, as quite frankly, what they are selling the culls from production runs, and not every caliber is always in production . . . .

I used to drop by their plant when it was still in California. Neat to be able to get them by the pound!! They would have 2 for 1 lb. specials now and then. They used to give out nice bullet key chains too.....see if they still do that. I still have some bags of bullets from back then in my reloading supplies. I sure do miss them!!!

PDshooter,

I live in Springfield MO, about 2 hours South of Sierra, and the Bucksnort Range is just 1/2 hour North of Sierra... you do the math. ;)

I stop in just about every time I go up there for a Highpower Match to buy all my .223 and .308 pills. They are pretty much all I shoot.

The advice given about the Outlet Store has been on the mark.

Factory seconds are sold by the pound at a reduced price.
Not all bullets are always available as factory seconds. If you need somthing in particular... CALL AHEAD to see if it's available.
Those that are in good supply will sometimes be run on specail sales.
You can just about count on the .308 168 gr HPBT Match King being there... they make those by the MILLIONS (IIRC, one of the techs told me that this one bullet comprises over 10% of their entire production).
Yes, they still give away the nickel (chrome??) plated bullet key chain.
NOTE: First run, green boxed bullets are NOT sold at the Sierra factory, only the "by the pound" factory seconds.

Most factory seconds of the Match King and Game King lines are good buys. Most of the seconds of these types are rejected for purely cosmetic reasons. Very seldom I'll find a 168 MK with a wrinkle in the jacket.

The Game Kings with the exposed lead tip will usually have a little nipple of extruded soft lead hanging off the nose that did not get broken off during the tumbling process. Rather than take the time to break it off then re-tumble them to smooth down the nub, they reject them. It's no problem at all to break off the bit as I'm loading them. They shoot just fine.

WARNING!! Based on my experiences.... I'd advise you to NEVER buy "Blitz King" bullets, the ones with the polymer tip as factory seconds. By the time you cull out all the ones with the tip insterted backwards (usually off kilter) and the ones with TWO tips crammed into the nose, you will be paying more for the good ones than if you'd bought them at retail in the green box.

BTW... take the time to do a factory tour..... about an hour. Fascinating.

Just my thoughts,
Swampy

The plant is only a couple of hours away and I've been meaning to get there for the last couple of years but haven't made it yet.
