I've only been a member of the NRA for 3 years, so I don't have voting privilages yet. As such, I can't seem to find any info on who's actually in the running. Anyone know and care to post? :)

There's a list of 28 names supplied in the Rifleman if you're a voting member, sorry, it's about 8 pages, too much to type.

Each comes with what appears to be a candidate supplied bio.

I'm churning through them, and will blog my take on it in the coming days.

Aside from Selleck, Zell Miller, and Cayne Robinson, the current NRA president, there's few names most folks would recognize.

So far, it looks like there's a smattering of folks I put 3 stars next to, a pile of duck hunters, some "strategic" folks with special skills or political clout/access, and a pile of folks that stike me as mediocre.

My goal is to foster a form of 2a more interested in freedom and self defense rather than target and duck shooting, and my appraisal shall reflect such.

what's the take on Selleck? I'll never forget his appearance on the Rosy-O-Doughnut show. I'm definitely in favor of the Pro2A types, the duck hunters can stick to their blinds.

How many years do you have to be in the nra to vote?

Ive been thinking about joining, but all the kowtowing in the 80s and 90s and all the dishonesty with candidate rankings made me sick and it had really put me off any idea of NRA membership for a while.

Always liked the GOA tho.

The celebrities are helpful simply because of their prominence. The only ones I personally know are Tom Gaines, who's not up for reelection, and Bill Carter. My recommendations:

Gaines - "Yes"
Carter - "When pigs fly"

I'm leery of candidates from Maryland, California, or New York....my gut instincts say "if they couldn't produce in their own state, what good are they at the National level?" That is probably not fair to that person, but the question still lingers.

I've had the priviledge to work with many on the list, Kayne Robinson is one of the most skilled at political strategy and how to work behind the trenches. Zell Miller would be a great NRA President....much better qualified than some of the other well known celebrities.

PLEASE post your assessments of the candidates . . . when the late Neal Knox used to post his recommendations, I had a source other than the NRA's "Nominating Committee" to work from.

But now there's a distinct information vacuum . . . I'd much rather vote for a staunch RKBA type rather than some "go along to get along" appeaser.

I see they've almost reached the point where there are exactly as many candidates as slots to fill, so that for all the pretense of voting, the board is merely being appointed. Enjoy your right to vote while they still have to bother counting it!

hmmm, well, how do they choose a president?

Anyway, how pro2A is Selleck anyway? I'd need to go catch some Magnum re-runs. When I was a kid I always thought he was carrying mexican in the small of the back, but somebody told me he had a holster back there...

How much control do members have over the NRA? For example, who actually elects the Board of Directors? I'm wondering how hard it would be to change the direction of the NRA to a more "no compromise" stance.
