I just bought a Uberti Stallion in .22--22 mag. It came with 2 cylinders.
My question is why can't you fire 22LR in the .22mag cyl thus eliminating the 2 cyl's My Blackhawk uses 1 cyl for .38 spl. and .357 mag. There both rimed cases. Just curious.

Because the .22 WMR case & rim is larger in diameter then the .22 LR.

.38 & .357 are the same diameter.

I wondered the same thing about Freedom Arms. I understand the 45acp cylinder is different, but there's one for 454 Casull and one for 45 Colt. I bought the whole set used and dutifully change cylinders when called for.

For dueling pistols, of course! ;)

You can fire the .45 Colt (and .45 Schofield) in a .454 cylinder. Only thing is, you would need to scrub it well before loading with Casull, as the shorter Colt case will leave carbon in the counterbore where the .454 case needs to go. Having the extra cylinder would mean you can switch back and forth at the range without cleaning.

As well, the "free bore" of the chamber could shave lead/copper off the bullet of the shorter round as it enters the reduced diameter further forward, since there is no taper from the counterbore in the chamber as there is in the forcing cone. This could, in theory, affect accuracy. Given FA's reputation, it is no surprise they would offer proper cylinders to mitigate this.

Not that it's any different in .357 revolvers shooting .38s, and if you fire a pile of .38 spl and go to insert .357 loads, they may be difficult or impossible to fully seat.

I believe you will find that the Magnum cylinder has chambers that are counter-bored to support the cartridge's rim, where the regular cylinder has chambers that are not. The Magnum generates higher pressures and so requires the extra rim support.

SAAMI pressure limit for both .22 LR and .22 WMR are both the same at 24,000 PSI.

Don't know about Uberti?
But all my S&W and Colt rimfires in .22 & .22 WMR have counter bored chambers.

If memory serves me, I beleive the .22 & .22 WMR Single-Sixes I used to have did too.

Counter bored chambers are almost universally used on rim-fire revolvers.

What rcmodel said. The WMR bullet is crimped in the case just like a .38 one is, with the bullet being narrower than the case.

The LR bullet is the same diameter as its case, but is narrowed at the base to fit in it.
