Why aren't you a cowboy action shooter?

Very few of the women participants are there for the dressup. They shoot, and well, too.

I can remember matches when I first started having 60 shooters. Matches these days average 30. Sounds like a loss of shooters but in 1996 there were 3 clubs in North Carolina. Now there are 15 SASS affiliated and a couple more who aren't. If a shooter does not mind driving a bit he/she can shoot every Saturday and Sunday of the month somewhere. I still have not made it to all clubs in state. I have my favorites and there is not enough time or money to go around.

Some of the ladies will come along with their husband or boyfriend and dress up for a while. After a bit they start thinking as long as they are there anyway, they might as well start shooting. Not all but a lot of them. Of course a lot of the gals start right off shooting from the start.

From 2000 to 2007. Hope this is not a repeat. Sorry if it is.

1st Saturday Salisbury, NC Old North State Posse
1st Sunday Charlotte, NC Carolina Roughriders
2nd Saturday Creedmoor, NC Carolina Cattlemen's Shooting and
Social Society
2nd Sunday Eden, NC Thornfield Rangers
3rd Saturday Lenoir, NC Gunpowder Creek Regulators
4th Saturday Statesville, NC Iredell Regulators
4th Sunday Usually went to a shooting range and practiced or traveled to a different Cowboy Club.
Went to every NC State match, all contigous state matches, including Georgia and Florida. Attended Southeast Regional match (Georgia) for five years, attended NorthEast Regional in Maryland for three years and before that, the NE Regional was held in Pennsylvania known as the Susquehanna Roundup. Traveled to Arizona for a National Match but another story. Attended World Championship in Moriarty, NM.
And there were usually a bunch of NC cowboys with me,or I was with them.
Lordy, what a ride. Kinda makes me wonder how many gallons of liquor and how many cows we consumed.

Red Cent I really enjoyed tha pictures. Great ole times indeed.
Three Cut and I are headed to the Smokey Mountain shootout Apr 7-9, remember that one?

Oh yeah. My first one was with Lone Dude. Won Senior that year (and the next :)Snow on the ground. "Course then it was held in the hills of Tennessee. We were allowed to wear our huntin' boots. Next year, I took the Fluffymobile and buried the sucker in the mud.
Awesome.

I think it's fantastic that people are getting out and living life within the shooting sports. You can shoot in a pink tutu for all I care. I am 100% for cowboy shooting (or any other type of shooting), and may try SASS one day. My primary issues right now are lack of gear and time. Go forth, have fun, and who cares what others think :)

I am not a history buff. But..... I think it is very interesting.......
Imagine the dress of the pilgrims. Imagine the dress of the Appalachia people. Imagine the dress of Daniel Boone. Imaginr the dress of the Vaqueros and how the cowboy image evolved. Re-inactment? Could be. Role playing? Could be.
I would love to go on a trail drive. For three days. Then I will let you know if I want to continiue. In lieu of the three day trail drive I can pick a Saturday or Sunday and imagine the Wonderful West. No bad images. Just cattle and the sunset. And a gunfight or two. :)

SASS

I joined SASS when it was fairly new..Got my "Handle" and badge.
I already owned a Colt single action, a Marlin Cowboy, Mod. 97 Winchester,Boots,Jeans, belt with large buckle, a Stetson and a large bandana.
Showed up at a SASS shoot in Columbus Texas. I was told that I could "Watch" to see how it is done and I could buy some of the merchandise (costumes) if I was so inclined. This is/was a pretty large SASS organization.
After being treated like a red-headed stepchild, I never went back..:fire:
On the way to my ranch in Del Rio Texas, I pass a SASS sign on a fence just outside of Uvalde Texas.
I have thought about stopping, several times, but have yet to do so.
O.P. asked why, thats my story..

Pistol Ranch. If you "showed up" at a SASS match that had vendors at it selling clothing and other items, it was most likely a clubs annual match or maybe even a bigger one. Usually you have to pre-register for these matches and they usually don't allow shooters who have never shot a SASS match before to compete. You don't just show up and shoot at these matches. A lot of these are 2 or 3 day matches also. If you went to a clubs regular monthly match I'd bet things would be different.

Gator : It was their advertised monthly match..At the time I went there was an obvous "clique".
As unfriendly a bunch as I have ever seen...certainly not normal for Texas..
For the few minutes I observed, their marksmanship left a lot to be desired.
My "handle" was Doc Trigg.

No wax bullets at regular matches, state, national or world. However; at the annual convention in Vegas they hold a contest inside and use wax bullets.

Just recently, Royal Barnes and a few of his gang manned a booth at the annual Dixie Classic.

If I remember correctly, Royal Barnes loaded about five thousand wax rounds and they were consumed by show goers. Royal mentioned last week that the kids (and adults) had a good time.

Step in, Royal.

Red, it was actually the Dixie Deer Classic. We went through about 4000 wax bullets and also had a Beam Hit setup inside at a different location and manned by Doc Clockadial. He's a clockmaker by trade. We spoke with a large number of people and I expect to pick up new shooters from the outing. We also do the Dixie Gun and Knife Show three times a year but there is no shooting gallery at that one. We just schmooze with people.:)
