Plain jane cowboy action shooting?

In my experience SASS is more about the fun than the competition.

Don't get me wrong - there are some serious shooters who are seriously good with their guns. I've seen CAS shooters with the same skill levels with their six guns as some really really good IPSC guys and you wouldn't believe how fast you can shoot a SXS if you practice and CAS shotguns aren't allowed ejectors just an extractor to partially eject the shell when you break the gun open. There are CAS shooters that can work a lever gun so fast that if you weren't watching you'd have to listen real hard just to be sure they weren't firing on full auto. Believe me there is no lack of skill in CAS shooting but the guys that exhibit that level of skill might make up 1 in 50 shooters where as in a sport like IPSC it might be more like 1 in 10 to 20 depending on the club (OKC Gunclub has some GrandMaster rated IPSC guys that if you didn't actually see what they can do you wouldn't believe it.)

But as I said before in my experience shooting CAS at OKC Gun Club most shooters are there for the fun of it. I'd estimate that at least a 1/4 of 'em spend more on the costume than they did on the guns. A lot of shooters bring their whole family all dressed up in period clothing to a shoot. And they all have fun. I've competed in both IPSC and CAS and the IPSC guys are serious shooters and game the system. They show up to shoot and to win. CAS shooters show up to have fun and if they win great if not - hey they had fun.

It's all about attitude. I like both shooting games myself but really couldn't put up with the tight ass gamers that shot IPSC at the OKC Gun Club so I found an IPSC group with a more laid back attitude towards the game - because after all - when push comes to shove IPSC, IDPA, CAS and the others are all - just a game.

JELLY JAR - "I have been interested in doing some sort of cowboy action shooting for some time but I plain don't want to play dress up or go around using some silly name."

Why not just call yourself the "Jelly Jar Kid??" ;)

Actually, now that I think of it, I believe that Steel Challenge now has a sanctioned Cowboy division. So if you're dead set against wearing a western costume, you might look into SC.
