hi all, was breaking in a new hunting barrel in 308win. have some aa2200 powder left over from ar15 days. loaded up 25 rds of 5 different weights and shoot at 25yrds,just to see what it would do. was grouping in the 3's and 4's.
reloaded the next 25 with same charges and shot at 100 yards. looked like shotgun patteren. only thing changed was the yardage.
why so good at 25yd and BAD at 100yd. first time i'v tryed this 25yd grouping ,but as i say, playing around.
thank you for your time

If you were getting 3-4 inches at 25 yards...100 yards is 4 times as far...that should give you 12-16 inches at 100 yards. Same level of accuracy, different distances.

Were you shooting offhand? Using iron sights? Bench-resting? The rifle should do better than that.

rifle shot .335-.458-.329-.401-.368,at 25yds. these were 5 shot groups. so if you say .500 group X 4{100yrds}=2.00"@100yds. just thought it should have done better.

the 'cone of fire' is mythical. it can work as a reference, but don't take it as gospel. if a gun shoots 1" at 50 yards, then the 'cone of fire' says it will shoot 2" at 100. but, in practice, you will find this is just not so.

the reason your loads fell apart at 100 yards is because your rifle didn't like the load. at all. and, it tried to tell you that at the 25 yard line, you just didn't listen to it. at 25 yards, you should have had 1 hole to expect any semblence of accuracy at 100.

I once experimented with 4895 in 22 Hornet. Got'r shootin dimes at 25yd. Couldn't even lob'm into the paper at 50yd. ;)

AA2200 wouldn't be my first choice for .308 Winchester.

However, it makes a darned fine 7.62x39 powder. Wanna sell the leftover amount? ;)

Speaking of which, are there any good sources of that Accurate Arms 2200 Data Powder any more? I missed the boat, unfortunately. :(
