The market for these stores is shocking to me given the sour economy in general. I can think of well over a dozen of the big stores that have opened in the last 6 yrs but can't really understand how they manage to turn a profit with such extravagant buildings.
My favorite is still Sportsmans Warehouse but they did take a hard hit and lost a bunch of their stores.

"Imo Greentop is overpriced as well."
Still the number one gun dealer in the state by a wide margin, so they're doing something right.

Marketing....tradition....stock

They advertise more than the competition
They have been around longer than the competition and grownups now remember going there as a kid.
The competition can't touch them on stock.
During the panic, their counters were FULL of handguns, while you go into Colonial Shooting academy and see a bunch of empty glass.

Green Top was cheaper than Gander Mountain, they are still cheaper than Bass Pro. I don't even bother with De Goffs...they are so unfriendly.

But to compare prices. (before the panic)
M&P at Greentop $559
M&P at Colonial Shooting $509

SR9C at Greentop $469
SR9C at Colonial Shooting $429

Ruger SR1991 at Greentop $800 (which is pretty high, but they are the only place I have actually seen them)

I like Gander myself. But I'm in the minority here as you are finding out. I have talked to the manager quite a bit and they actually funnel quite a bit of goodies to a grand opening. Making sure they look "up to snuff". They also do this if one of their competitors in the area is having a grand opening...It is nice to see some full shelves though!
-I guess... I haven't seen any

The Gander Mountain back in my home town (Lafayette, Indiana) was very well stocked the last couple times I went home for a visit. There prices are somewhat higher than what I'm used to, but hey! The trade off is if you need ammo, they have it!

I think 100 round WWB .45 was running $55 when I last looked. That's about $15 (give or take) more than I normally pay for it from Walmart.

Still...not bad these days.

Agreed..The price they have on 50rd Blazer/Remington plinkin types is usually pretty ok. 15-17$...I can't find it much cheaper than that anywhere else either- Without shipping or hazmat or "unavailable".
