Why do Remington 700 mags not work well?

I have a fairly new 700 LTR and loading it is a pain in the butt. Being a 700, it does not have a detachable mag, so it must be loaded from inside the receiver. It's a .308, so it's a short action.

What happens is it feels like the cartridges need to fit JUST RIGHT in order to load properly. Sometimes a shell will "click" over to one side (the left) and does not feed or feed smoothly into the chamber. Loading it in general just seems awkward and clumsy.

It just seems like a crappy set-up, and I would expect more from a $900 rifle. I have read other complaints on the same thing from past threads.

Boy that problem is a new one on me!

I must have 10 Remmy 700 somethings. Have never had any problem like you describe and I've been shooting a Rem 700 since 1968.

Sure wish I could watch to see what it is you're doing so I could offer help.
