Why do you come to THR?

1. Entertainment about my favorite subject!
2. The Pictures & Stories about buying guns (Holds me over until I buy another....next best thing)
3. Information
4. Humor

The most informative site, the best moderated, entertaining and most of all to be able to exchange experiences, knowledge and ideas with good people. Hey, we do have our times but then we have moderators who know when and how to uh, uh, uh, moderate.

For all the reasons mentioned above - as well as the veiwpoints of members outside the U.S. on their situations regarding firearms ownership compared to ours.

I was supposed to get a decoder ring.
I wanted the green one.

Would you settle for a Mood Ring? :D

For diversion or amusement and useful tips on the subject.

Why I come here:
1. Because I'm a new shooter I want to learn about guns and 2A and there's tons of good info here
2. Because my real life friends aren't gun friendly. THR an island in a sea of antis
3. Because only grownups come here. Some of the grownups happen to be teens.

What could make it better:
It could be a little more female-friendly. I get two distinct, though subtle vibes from the guys here:

> ignore 'em and they'll go away
> we gotta protect the little ladies <john wayne voice>

To be perfectly clear, I've never felt any outright hostility. But I'm often rendered speechless (typeless?) by what guys think they can decide for the females in their lives.

Most obvious example: some guys have to be reminded over and over and over and over that the women in their lives should be able to choose if, when, and what they'll shoot.

Most annoying example: a male mod closed a "girls with guns" thread because it might offend the ladies. The OP wasn't asking for a swimsuit issue of Guns and Ammo, just "what do you ladies shoot, and please post pics of yourselves with your guns." My reaction upon seeing the thread title was "yay, I'll be able to get an idea of female presence here." Thank god I was protected from that. :banghead:

Once in a while I run into a post by a guy who seems to get it. When that happens, my testosterone-overload meter is reset to zero :)

That was a lot of words for what I actually consider a MINOR issue. But I've been wanting to get it off my chest for a while.

* because i love puzzles.

I do think the diversity of this group makes it more interesting. We aren't all on the same channel, but we generally respect each other's right to form an opinion. I learn something every time I tune in.

I must admit that I do miss corneredkat, tamara, and some of the other females that used to hang out here. It's probably the normal evolution of boards that mature and members go on to start their own or participate in more specialized arenas. Everyone has something valuable to contribute.

Many thankless hours in the moderators trenches helps keep things on track here. In some cases, mods who close an off topic thread will suggest another board at which the discussion might be carried on. That would be helpful unless the thread has devolved into a pit of puerile, pejorative petulance. No time for that here.

Lots of good advice from people who clearly have much stored up knowledge about guns. I'm more interested in the guns and learning more about reloading than I am the tactics. I like discussion, including the written kind. I like that there are numerous categories. Some I check almost daily, some I've never even opened. Don't have to filter through the topics that don't interest me. I like offering what limited knowledge I do have (see my low post count). I like the occasional expert/celebrity such as Massad Ayoob, Tom Gresham, Michael Bane, etc. stopping by.

I was actually pointed here by someone on a golf forum. Now I frequent here, but seldom there. Golf equipment from 20 years ago is irrelevant except for historical interest. But, the 45/70 is still a good cartridge for large game and revolvers still shoot as good as other handguns.

The best part about anything I don't like is that I can ignore it. This is just an extension of a hobby.

I'm still new to gun collecting and shooting, and THR has so many informed users. Found it because every time I would look up something on google, there would already be at least 2 threads about it on here.

Basically for the combined knowledge. You put rcmodel,The Bushmaster, Walkalong, and a few others together and there's more experience & knowledge than ANY where else.

to pick up hot chicks, duh what else is the internet for?

well that and to drink from the fountain of knowledge here and enjoy the great exchange of opinions and ideals with other great members.

I don't think I found this through google though. I think I was stumbling. If you have never tried it I suggest trying stumbleupon, you can set it to "stumble" only gun websites. The gun related sites I have found that I would have never know were out there are astounding. Here's the link for that thing, careful it's freaking addicting sometimes http://www.stumbleupon.com/

Actually...

THR became my home when Rich closed TFL for a bit.
I use THR for communicating with folks via PM, quite a bit.

KarenTOC,
You will appreciate this, I hope.

All my life I have assisted ladies, kids, elderly and physically elderly.

Being blunt, I earned what I have assisting such folks, and some of the ladies include sexual assault and rape victims. The truth is, some ladies that have been through a evil trauma, do not want another lady to assist them with guns, or anything else.

This is hard to explain, and difficult for many to understand, including ladies.
I am a guy, and a lady that has bee beaten, battered, abused along with kid(s), and a gun, and/or knife was used against them, and they want me, - a guy- to assist them with gun, or knife stuff.

I get PMs from ladies, and kids about this.

Staff has jumped my case for not reporting the nasty PMs, even threats to me, from some that do not agree with some of what I share in public.

Well these folks have never held the hand of a 19 year while a rape kit was being administered. Nor have they arranged to get a single mom and kid out of a dangerous environment, having 00 buckshot fired at them , and getting that single mom and kid moved, and relocated to a safer environment, maybe out of state.

Some PMs are from physically limited, and not all PLs are old.
Nasty PMs from me posting a .22 for defense will work, especially if under No Recoil Orders from Doctor, Surgeon and Physical Therapists.

I was never in the Military, but we have some Staff that are/were, and when I share I get first dibbs in taking a hickory axe handle to anyone that talks down to a serviceman or women, injured due to conflicts, and the Doc said "no recoil orders".
Yeah, I have assisted these Brave Men & Women in real life, I have via PMs as well.
I get some elderly with arthritits and other problems.

Not every member on a gun forum is a 25 year old male, and full of piss-n-vinegar.
Plenty of folks to mentor them...

These other folks , these ladies, kids, elderly and physically limited have a right to learn, and pass forward as passed to them.

If it cannot be done publicly , it gets done in private, and THR's PM has been a very useful communication tool.

While I have moderated other forums, and some not gun related, I still used THR as a base, and then TFL for backup when it came back online.

Currently I am a moderator on another gun forum, and more communications are being done through that medium.

I am a member elsewhere, under different user names. Some places I am/ or have been, one could not access unless they were a member, or someone vouched for you, or you had credentials.

THR is public, so it worked for a new home base when TFL closed.
Me, being me, have back up plans for when THR is down.

Why do you come to THR?

The place that I hung out for many years morphed into something unlovely.

THR was suggested to me by someone who witnessed that ugliness on the other site ... and I am very glad that he did ... but my participation & interest in all of several websites of this genre slowed way down after my bad experiences at my old "home" site.

I have found THR to be both interesting & comfortable. I like the quality of the moderation here and most of the posters seem to be rather laidback & levelheaded. Folks with Agendas & 'Tudes don't seem to do too well here, which is refreshing.

Who else would put up with me?Seriously,I enjoy the whole "common interest among a diverse group" thing.
In general , a nice bunch of folks
