Pretty simple, what makes you get out there in the woods? Are you after antlers or meat? Some of both? Only trophies or anything tasty? Or something else???

I'll start. I love several aspects; meat is first and foremost for me but I do enjoy a good set of antlers. Also the feeling of doing something for myself, and butchering the animal and putting it into the freezer is very satisfying to me. Even getting out into the woods where I can't hear traffic or any other human sounds is a good day for me, whether I shoot anything or not. It reminds me of how things are supposed to be, at least for every other animal but humans...what about you?

Hope I didn’t skew your data. I too like all but the primary reason I hunt is for meat. I do enjoy every aspect and enjoy the camaraderie of working for the hunt with a good friend, dinner on the fire, and sleeping out in the wilds. I do enjoy getting out of the office but my job puts me out in nature and in the wilds quite often. The horns are pretty but I don’t chase them, I usually do cull hunts and antlerless hunts. I have seen too many folks get so uptight about a “nice rack” that they forget to have fun or become disappointed because someone else got one that scored better. I pride myself on the shot much more than the headgear. For that reason I had to choose ‘for the meat’

I selected "other". I have this thing about perspective and reaffirmation of my true place in this world is critical to my self respect and personal well being.

I know too many things in life can be bought, but the truly important things cannot. Even when shivering cold, wet, tired and just absolutely physically and mentally exhausted (I hunt true Colorado wilderness areas) I reaffirm my true place in this world in my selected hardship.

My mother still lives in a farm house with no electricity and no running water. Not because she has to but because she gets satisfaction in the simplicity of life and the resistance she puts up to "buying" her way out of the things that sustain life and not pursue possessions that really only end up distracting one from what life really is. I'm the kid in the family that identifies with this.

My first elk last year was a really nice 6x6 and of course I was proud of it but the satisfaction of a freezer full of life sustaining meat taken by my own actions instills a primal satisfaction at the expense of the sorrow full death I didn't want to watch. I hate watching the dying... but that's me...

ultimately, i get out for a little fun with the boys, the opportunity to be out in the wilderness whether it be desert or forest. I look forward to bringing home some meat for the table, but mostly shoot dove and quail, so the feast is typically a one-day event. I do have a few pounds of elk left in my freezer and if given the chance i would pull the trigger on something to make the others back at camp go slack-jawed, and sometimes i've tried for that but ended up going home with a $85 piece of paper reminding me that not only do I have to keep buying meat at the grocery store, but i also don't have to clean my gun.

I voted escape because the "all of the above" contained a couple of things that mean nothing to me. When I was young, and full of P_ss and Vinegar. The hunt, and kill, meant every thing. Now I enjoy the "camplife" aspect much more than the hunt itself. I take greater pleasure in having a young, excited leasemate, drive up with something he's thrilled about, and wants to celebrate. I say get the camera, the Whiskey, and the knives, we got some celebratin' to do. :D

Disabled, Unemployable, No income at this point, It's the only way to put meat in the freezer.

To bad I couldnt select two of the options. I hunt primarily for the meat and I wont kill anything that I will not eat or be able to give someone that will eat it. But I also love the aspect of getting out of the house back to basics and just enjoying the outdoors. I have never been a trophy hunter dont get me wrong I wouldnt let a trophy walk but it isnt like on my fixed income I can afford the taxidermy so mainly Im just there to fill the freezer.

Sorta "all of the above", although I never really thought of it as escape. I grew up hunting, from the time I was a little-bitty. It has always been just a part of my life. I've made a point of living in a lifestyle where I could hunt anytime I wanted to.

I hunt for food my wife loves deer steaks, and I get to go out in the middle of no were and spend good time with my pops, so I can't go wrong

To harvest wild game and have wild meat is nice esp we are used to eating the ones from the meat market.

The challenge and thrill of the hunt is what keeps us going.

Depends on the animal, and it depends on the level of freezer vacancy. And I can always go camping, several times per year, to escape.

My first priority is to fill the freezers with meat. A mule deer and an elk or two every year gets that done. If I fill my elk tag in the muzzleloader season in September, when I go back for the regular rifle season in October, I hunt for antlers because the freezers are nicely packed by then.

But I'd also like to one day be able to take a number of big game animals that I haven't been able to as of yet. Those animals will be killed almost purely for the trophy of tagging a member of their species. If/when I'm able to go mountain goat hunting, or after fifteen years in the draw I finally get that moose tag, I'm going for the trophy of it. The meat from those types of hunts is just collateral reward. I imagine that I'll only get to hunt some of these animals once in my life, so whatever I bring back will have to be my trophy.

I just like to hunt. Couldn't even care less if I even get anything anymore. I just like it being out there with a rifle.

I go for the family time together. My brother, his son and son inlaw, two of my sons and a son inlaw. It is time just for family time and relaxation. Also for the meat. We process our own deer and eveyone uses it. It is a good time to get back to basics and good family time. We are not trophy hunters. I voted other because of the first option.
