Why Is my 39-2 So Accurate????

Ok, a while back I was at a local show and picked up a pretty beat S&W 39-2 9mm for around $150. Aprox 60% blue and severly warn annodizing on the frame. I took it home, painted the frame with Gun-Kote, baked it; blued the slide with Oxpho-blue and cleaned up the grips. Figured it would do as a truck gun. Since then Ive taken it to the range about once a week and I cant get over how accurate it is. I own Glocks, Brownings, Sigs, Walthers and a few other 9's. But this Is by far the most accurate 9mm I have. It out-shoots my custom Belgian/Barsto BHP.

I have owned a S&W 659 and a 5906, both were along the lines of the "acceptable" dept. The 39-2 is more like a "bullseye" dept gun. Anyone have an explanation for this??? I sure as H3LL dont???

Smith did put some time and thought in building the M39. They were trying to test the waters for a pistol from them and looked long and hard at the competion. After that model they ran into the various owner problems and IMO have never built a pistol worthy since.
The M39 has always been a fine pistol. It's capacity is what put it in the shadows of the Wondernines, not it's shooting qualities.

Sounds like a real good find, Keeder! I always kinda liked em but when I started shooting the .45ACP was the only other US made pistol available and it had 7 shots so I passed on the '39. I got a 38 Master which is the bullseye .38 version of the Mod 39 and like you say leaves nothing to be desired in the accuracy dept. Never did like those slide mounted dinguses, though.

Hello Everyone!

Another thumbs up for the S&W model 39-2. A great design,
and even a better firearm. I won't go as far too say its any
more accurate than my SIG's; but I will say it will give them
a run for the money! I've owned three of four (?) in
the last thirty odd years, and wish I had one now.

You just simply got a really good 39-2 or it has a BarSto barrel.

Agree on accuracy

I also have a S&W model 39 that I bought new in 1968 and have shot regularly, if infrequently, over the years. I attached a picture of it, with aftermarket grips from Kelly in Texas.

As for accuracy, mine is good but not really better than my other two 9mm guns, a Sig P226 and a Glock 19. It does have a rear sight that is adjustable for windage, which is a nice feature.

Keederdag, Good to hear about your M39-2!
Mine is also accurate, used to surprise some of the guys at the range I used to go to in NYC. Had two failures to fire in about a thousand rounds, but I think it was due to some bad reloads I purchased at the range.

Only problem is, I'm having some trouble finding good mags for it.
I have two factory ones that run fine. Used to have some aftermarket types from Triple K. They now lay in pieces in a case. Worst mags I ever bought. Problem was, the cheap plastic followers broke in two.

There is ALOT of variation in the accuracy of factory-produced guns in general, and ALOT of variation in the accuracy of different ammunition loads. And ALOT of variation in the accuracy of specific gun/ammo combinations. It really is a complete crapshoot, and you lucked out.

JimD; J&G sales claims to have factory S&W mags (used) for $20 a pop. I never put much stock in what they claim so, If I can get up there I'll let ya know.
I think I just lucked out! It's quickly becoming my fovorite 9mm; funny thing is, I never really have been a fan of Smith Auto's. The truly amazing part is that some ignorant fool abused it so much over the years. God when I find a good one I cherish the sucker, These day's quality/accuracy is hard to even buy, let alone luck onto.

Sorry to say, but at this very moment the timing just
isn't right. You see, I am in the waiting stages of
my disability determination due to a near fatal car
accident; whereas I suffered a broken neck! It has
since fused its-self back together, but sometimes
the pain and suffering gets out of hand! The Social
Security Administration sure takes their dad blasted
time with these claims; but as my attorney said, "let
the clock roll". Cuz if it takes two years to get relief,
they got to go back and pay you for that amount of
back time once the case is won.

And besides, ain't nobody gonna hire a 56 yr. old
w/m with a broken neck, whose blind in one eye
and can't see out of the other! (Laughing Loudly)
But I got to tell everyone, this is no kind'a life; as
I can't enjoy doing many thing's that I use to do.


I certainly appreciate you thinking of me on the S&W
model 39-2, as its one of my all time favorites! And
believe me, if there was any way I could swing it;
I'd burn the candle way into the wee hours of the
morning to have it.

I DO NOT want you folks feeling sorry for me; I feel
really blessed, cuz the 5th vertebra managed too
somehow stay in perfect alignment. I took this
opportunity to share this experience with my
THR family ONLY to let you folk's know that a MVA
at 30 mph can be terriffic. So, while I drool over
my friends S&W nickel 39-2; you guys and gals
be careful out there in THR land.

I have a mint 39 - 2 with 5 factory mags. Absolutely love that gun! It's reliable and super accurate and just beautiful to look at. Definitely a keeper.

Hey - for 150.00 I would just pick up a second one, just for the heck of it.
