Why is this $279?

Probably because it's an M38, and there's fewer of those around than there are M91/30's and M44's. Still kinda high, IMO.

Because M38's dried up a few years ago. They were $220 - $250 last time a small shipment came in.

$280 is a reasonable price for a hard to find varrient that is long long long out of prduction.

I'm glad I bought my M38 a couple years ago when the local Big 5 had some. I can't remember, but I "think" it was ~$130. I know it was a little more than my 91/30, but that one was only $69.95.

For around that money, you can get a M39 Finnish Mosin, which IMO, are better shooters and usually better shape than the war weary M38's. But to each their own.

Funny, the Finns usually run $399 or so for comparable condition on GB.

People need to face the fact that mosins wont be around forever... and that some models are actually rare and hard to find.

Darn, I had a counterbored M-38 years ago that was a blast to shoot, (in every sense of the word), that i think I paid $60 for. Shoulda hung on to it.

I wouldn't buy Finn Mosins from Gunbroker, I have a C&R FFL and can get M39's in good condition from several dealers, much cheaper than the OP mentioned.

Me wants to know where to get Finns for $200...merrry xmas to me.

I picked mine up about a year ago in fantastic shape with a counter-bore for 150... Accuracy leaves a little to be desired but its good enough for me...

But you know what they say... There is a sucker born every day. And a fool and his money are soon parted.

I never really paid attention to the Mosins but as of a few weeks ago, interest has risen. I didn't even know there were different models until reading this thread. If Iever had one, it would probably be an occasional plinker or a back up hunting rifle stashed in the truck.

Anyone want to teach me a few things about the Nagants? Difference in models/things to look for or watch out for, etc.?

I'd pass at that price. You can still find them on the internet for less if you have a C&R. More realistic is $150-180.

IdahoLT1:

With huge numbers of MN owners using large amounts of surplus Russian, Bulgarian, Czech, Polish, Hun. ammo, you might need to compare one or two types.

Experienced owners (middle-aged guys I know) report that a given rifle will do better with ammo from whichever country.
You might need to experiment with Polish, then Czech etc.

The best-looking MN 44s I've seen with the best bores/rifling are the Polish, but a friend bought an excellent Hungarian 44 at the Orlando show in November. A 91/59 can also be a collectible gun, but they seem to be more accurate than the common Russian 44s.
