Why shoot Blackpowder?

Fast Frank, are you shooting at targets on that long yellow beam in front of you? What distance is that, 10'? I'm just playing with you Frank.I've never seen anything like that before,is that for pistol targets? Our little range has about 8 tables,a dirt bank at 25yds.and the rear bank at 100yds.

Speaking solely for myself, I enjoy the mixture of the old and the new. The old obviously refers to BP shooting as opposed to using a modern cartridge firearm. The new part refers to the technological improvements found on inlines that improve their performance.

Let me say that I believe in "a big tent" concerning BP firearms. I welcome both traditionalists and modern shooters such as myself. It is better to stick together than to hang separately.:D

I was hoping that ED/PA would answer my question...

Just in case my original post was too involved for him to read I will ask it again here.

Why does my Thompson bother you ED/PA?

Why would anybody shoot an in-line or some dremt-up configuration of a non historically offered wepon . . . if it werent for hunting seasons created and streched past their original intent to offer people the oppurtunity to shoot anything that remotley resembles or newly contrived to be a blackpower wepon?

Why hunt when you can go to the store to buy meat?

Why, why, why? Because we can, and I'm glad I live in a country that allows me to do so regardless of the fact that you can't figure out a reason for it.

um.. well, all I can say is that given the opportunity I'd like to own a 5lb cannon and I'd shoot it pretty often. i dont agree with using blackpowder firearms to get around regulations designed to allow game to "grow back". however, i see nothign wrong withs hooting or owning guns in any configuration except the kaboom in yoru hands kind.

I own every kind of weapon: Swords (Windlass Steelcrafts), bows (Mathews Drenalin and Valin Recurved), crossbow (Stryker), BP (Ruger, Pietta, TC, Lyman), SIG (pistol), GLOCKs (pistols), BROWNINGs (pistols and Citori), H & K (pistol), NORINCO (pistol), KIMBER (pistol), STEYR (pistol), RUGER (revolver), SMITH & WESSON (revolver) etc etc etc... and a lot more

I love every one of them.

When it's time for BP, it's time for BP: today, I shot my BP pistol (.50) and my seven BP revolvers (.45, .44, and .31). Including my Lyman deer stalker .50 and my TC Hawken .50. It took half of the afternoon to clean them afterwards. So what ? It's just fun.

I have a Knight inline that uses caps (not 209s) and I love the thing. And yes, it's even scoped... :neener: That said it is my meat gun. I even end up using the thing during regular deer (rifle) season half the time. And yes, I actually use real black powder in the thing. It forces me to use only one shot and does not give the option of a reload for correction of an miss. And, when hit properly, the deer go down as if struck by lightning. That's why I have it. I would still use it even if I lost the ability to use it in October muzzleloader season.

That said, I also have a flintlock (stainless with camo stock). It wasn't my first choice. I wanted to hunt late muzzleloader and had a Lyman Great Plains rifle on order but Wal Mart screwed that up--yes they can order stuff, but it's a bad idea. So short on time I got what I could. I'd love to trade up for something a little more traditional on that one...

Anyone who takes the time to shoot muzzleloaders, olde tyme or modern inline, has taken on a challenge of a true single shot. Out west where ranges can easily be 300+ yards of open or untraversable ground, the scoped inline works. Actually I think the inline was invented circa 1800.

I'm answering Frank first (he asked twice) lol....... PS i'm not one to stir the pot and watch everyone hanging. My oppologies for not answering sooner.

Frank.....I dont have a thing against a TC hawken. For that matter nor do I have anything against an inline or a BP cartridge gun or a flintlock or anything BP related.
What I do have a problem with is why everybody needs a special seaon for everything up to a slingshot? As for western BP hunting , if your shots are over 200 yrds and you dont feel the crockett gun will reach its intended target fine use the in-line or long range sharps.

As for deer hunting opportunites that depends on deer densities where you live or hunt. I personally dont need deer meat to feed my family or sustain life, so I dont need to shoot 7 deer (although inthis state I probably could if I could find them). In Pa. we have now 2 muzzleloader seasons. One (early) is any type of muzzleloader(doe only w/ appropriate tag). The second (after the regular firearm season) is flintlock only(with apprpropiate tags).

Now consider you hunt the early muzzleloading season here. You are also out in the woods with another special group. These are seniors and juniors using modern firearms (like a 30.06).......nifty huh we also have archers out there too with bows and arrows (it gets better) and small game hunters using shotguns.

Forget the BP for a moment. here in Pa we can hunt deer from Sept. thu Feb. depending on what you use and what permits you have and if you can access the land (we do have state land/ almost void of deer now). My personal feeling is that hunters are their own worst enemy. Ex: state offers a ga-zillion special seasons and a ga-zillion permits for sale , and people love it here. They kill as many deer as they can and fund a (IMO) mis-managed Deer management system. But That's here in Pa.! Maybe I love BP and hunting too much. Maybe I like seeing deer more than killing them. Lengthening "a" season is one thing and shooting the weopn of choice should be your right.
I for the life of me cant see the need to create a special season or seasons for every wepon known to mankind or the need to shoot more deer than your family can eat. What's happening in this state could very well happen in others. Lastly This topic wa intended or directed toward the hunting crowd. Sorry if I offended the non-hunting BP shooter. For that matter didnt mean to offend anyone, just make you think about resources and how they might be managed which might not be in the "hunters" best interest if he wants to continue to hunt into the future.

Note: This year I have voluntarily chose not to hunt doe again in this state.
I have also joined an association of 33000 plus other hunters who have (as of Sept.) filed suit against the state for what we consider unfounded and improper deer management practices.

Also , I am a trap shooter and it took me awhile to figure out why you skeet shooters are always laughing off your misses...........lol
