why shooting gloves?

Please forgive me gentlemen, but I'm an absolute beginner waiting for my first handgun (a P99, hoping to start well ): I know why eyes and ears protection when shooting, but what's the purpose of the gloves in shooting?

Not sure about handgun, but I like having them for shotgun, so I don't burn my paws on the barrel, and I don't tear up my thumb from loading.

Your hands are too delicate to mess up, and it's an excuse to buy some more tactical gear! And once in a while, things fly back.

When I finally took my Mini-14 to an outdoor range to test fire it, I'd gotten set up and was looking intently through the sights at the bullseye and felt something walk across my left hand. I looked down and saw a large scorpion scuttle across my unprotected hand and slip between the boards of the shooting bench. I really REALLY wished I'd been wearing gloves for even light protection from critters. It would also save me the trouble of bandaging a thumb when it gets bitten by an ornery magazine.

Why indeed? I have a pair of shooting gloves. They seemed to be a good idea at the time, but I don't wear them. I find that they alter my grip to a degree that I don't like to have them on. Most of my handguns are compact carry guns with short grips. The material of the gloves gives me that much less room on the grip. Plus, I think if you get used to the feel of practicing with gloves, gripping the gun will feel unnatural if you ever have to use it for defensive purposes. Of course, your shooting gloves will be nowhere around when TSHTF. I want my practice to stimulate real use as much as possible. I'm a believer in muscle memory.

I use them occassionally when shooting trap or skeet. Keeps my hands cleaner when handling the fired hulls, but more importantly, I don't get perspiration or oily fingerprints on the gun as much. Constant use of the thumb-break lever on one of my shotguns wore the bluing off the area rather quickly; I was later taught to use gloves and that seems to have cured the bluing wear problem on my shotguns. The blued frame on one of my 1911's shows handling wear (bluing is worn off), but I never use gloves with handguns.

they help with felt recoil and torque. easier on the thumbs for loading mags.

i bought a pair of cheap baseball batters gloves and they work great. very thin for dexterity too.

I have a pair of PAST shooting gloves, I use them when shooting heavy recoiling handguns (FA 454's) or if I'm planning on shooting a lot of hot 357 or 45 loads. They help with felt recoil.

I use them when shooting my P7M8 at the range (they get really hot if you fire a lot of rounds) and prevents me from cutting up my fingers when reloading mags.

Why? Because I wear gloves to the office when it's cold out so I train in the same gloves. Can't pick the weather in a fight.

I've got a medical problem that causes my right hand to be weaker than it should. The right gloves give me just enough extra grip to allow me to shoot without the gun slipping. Pulling the slide back on some semi-autos is just a little too much for me as well. Again the gloves add just enough grip to allow me to do so. Also, being on active duty in the Army, and now in the National Guard (I've kept the medical problem from my chain of command in the Guard), having gloves, even the thin type, helps a lot in the cold and to keep my hands from getting torn up.

Get used to shooting without gloves. Chances are you won't be wearing gloves if you have to use your P99.
When you practice, you should practice for a real life scenario.
Gloves will change the way your gun feels and points.
I've been shooting over 40 years without gloves and my little sissy hands are still intact.

With our Climate : I wear when cold and out hunting--maybe.
Fingerless wool gloves , sometimes a fingerless for firing hand, heavier for off hand. Lightweight gloves in brambles and briars, trigger finger may be cut away. Generally don't like gloves, have a place and do practice CCW -just in case-never know-its all gotta work.

Have seen problems because people not check if gloves work with carry pc...better to know beforehand
