I would love a FA M1 to keep my Garand and 1911 company, might even settle for a new production semi, but no way would I buy one with the pinnochio barrel. But all things being equal, I would rather have a springer M1A for the almost never occasion that I have $1500 burning a hole in my pocket.

There is only a single tommy that I really like, and as much fun as I am sure it would be, it would kinda suck cleaning it by candlelight after BGE cut my electric.

I'd love one, but I barely get by with ammo for target practice and like a lot of people in America I work my butt off and have just enough money to be broke after I pay my bills.

Bummer, huh? I'll take your pity if it comes with a tommy gun.

"Because Grandpa didn't like them. Preferred the BAR."

Uh...because .45 ACP is expensive and all the rest of my guns combined haven't cost as much as one of the fugly semi Tommy guns?

Now if I had a money tree...

I might buy one full-auto, if the NFA were repealed and they did not cost an insane amount of money.

Other than that, I can think of at least a couple dozen things I'd rather spend $1500 on than a clunky .45ACP carbine that weighs in at 10+ pounds, like:

- why the hell don't I own a Rem 700?
- why the hell don't I own a CZ 75B?
- why the hell don't I own a Springfield GI?
- why the hell don't I own a couple of Makarovs?
- why the hell don't I own a FAL?
- why the hell don't I own an M1A?
- why the hell don't I own a Sharps?
- why the hell don't I own two ARs?
- why the hell don't I own five AKs?

...and on, and on, and on...

Honestly, the only appeal to me is as an actual subgun, and I've still got several lighter, more modern choices even in that group. Even in a fantasy world where I was worth billions, the Thompson would be quite a ways down on the to-buy list.

Really - a semi-auto MP5 or Thomson is going to give me all that, huh? I don't think so, pal - it's a big, heavy 9mm or .45 pistol - period.

Well I was speaking of select fire SMGs, but now that you mention is a "semi only" version (such as the FBI MP5) will still give you everything I mentioned.

Which is why the FBI uses them, even in semi only.

And a HK94 really isn't all that heavy. Hardly weights any more than a MP5.

I'd rather spend my cash on something more modern, like the full-auto UMP 45 I fired yesterday.

Unfortunately for most folks, the UMP45 is a post-86 gun, meaning the average citizen isn't trusted to own one by "The Man."

Why would I want to own a $1500 semiautomatic carbine that weighs over 10 lbs firing a balistically retarded cartridge that isn't powerful enough for any sporting use whatsoever beyond 30yds.

Especially I can buy a $500 levergun carbine

Gosh, I would LOVE to own a Tommy. A real one, not a semi. How cool would that be?

Here's a SAD Tommy Gun story I heard recently...

My FFL dealer is also a Class 3 NFA/SOT dealer. Recently, he was looking through the firearms inventory of the Richmond Police Department to see if they had any old handguns that might have value as collectors items. He discovered that the RPD has a number of Thompson's that have been in storage for decades. He was able to look at them and said all were in excellent shape and some appeared to have never been fired at all. Knowing the market value of a Thompson, he offered to make a one-for-one trade for any Class 3 weapon the RPD wanted in exchange for the Tommy's. The offer went all the way up the chain of command to Police Chief Rodney Monroe who nixed the deal. Apparently, the Tommys will remain in storage until they're eventually destroyed.

If I could legally buy one of those full automatic Thompsons that is possessed by SFPD, I would.

Been thinking about one of the semi auto's. Money is tied up in my forthcomming Bohica 50 cal upper. When my lotto numbers come up the full auto will be mine. However as mentioned above i am not crazy about the look of the 16" barrel and the short barrel verison is not an option here in MI.

I think the police chief felt insulted at such a low ball offer. He would rather chop up the guns than to get screwed on such a deal. Police departments are not that ignorant of market prices.

Sorry man, but a submachine gun which:

#1 Has a ridiculously long barrel.
#2 Is neutered to fire semi-auto.
#3 Fires form a closed bolt.

Is just too far form the original design of the firearm. Modern M4 are a great improvement over the original M-16s, but in this case the above modifications make the firearm just stupid.

It would be like buying a Bugatti Veyron and dropping in a Sears craftsman 12hp riding lawnmower engine into it. All flash nothing under the hood.

My MAC-10 is a POS. But it is a real full auto SMG. And I really didn’t pay much more than I would have for one of those semi Thompsons.

I bought it because it was made in Knoxville and this one was previously owned by Richard Pryor. I bought it from his last wife, Jennifer Lee, who sent me a letter of authenticity.

Oh that's absolutely hilarious given the thread I posted a while ago. He's in this anti-gun skit with voice-overs by Robin Williams... haha

I would love the opportunity to own a Thompson submachine gun. As cool as the A1's are, my favorite is the pictured M1. The first full-auto I ever fired was a WWII M1 and was bitten by the bug. Should have bought while I could, (pre '86'). They were cheap. Went for a PS MAC-10 instead, ($350.00). I loved that gun as well, but wish I could reverse time. Folks that say they're too heavy need to man up...My grandfather carried one from Normandy to Berlin....You wussies... :D
