Why won't my new synthetic forearm fit my Mossberg 500A?

I just got this off Ebay and it is too small to fit on the forearm tube. It is for a 12ga and that is what I have so I don't get it. It is just a little too small on the inside diameter so I wonder if I need to bore it out or if I got the wrong part somehow.

Could be but it is only about 1/32" too small. Is the 20ga just a little smaller or quite a bit smaller? I have an older Moss 500A, is that the problem maybe?

That could be it... maybe they changed the dimensions a little. My 500 I bought around 1997 or 98 but it's in San Diego now with my brother so I can't compare. Besides, mine had that fore-arm from the factory.

I'd call Mossberg or email them with a "?" and see what they say.

I'm 99.999999% sure that forearm is NOT a Mossberg. It looks like a Remington 870. I would almost put money on it. Somebody else back me up here. I have a short forend on mine and have researched all of the forends that are offered for the Mossberg, and that isn't one of them. Mossbergs are more rounded in the front. I'd send it back and get a refund.

Sure looks to be the same style as the Remington. But I would bet the same company makes them all, maybe Speedfeed? I have seen the Remington versions be very tight also, and require some judicious sanding to get on the fore-end tube. But someone could have made a mistake.

Too small is still better than too large, long as it is not 'way too small.

Saw a split in the end of a piece of the biggest diameter dowel your drill will take in its chuck, the dowel being long enough to reach at least halfway through the forearm, insert a piece of sandpaper, wrap around the dowel so the grit is outside, and sand away. Best if it is a variable speed drill, run on slow to medium speed, you'll see what works best (the coarser the grit of the sandpaper, the slower the drill).

Remember, I said _judicious_- try the fit often in the process. Could be just a tight spot, only sand what won't fit.

The Winchester 1300 has a nearly identical in looks fore-arm of that type, maybe you got the wrong one?

Coming off Ebay I wouldn't be surprised. I'd return it and buy a proper one from Mossberg or Choate etc. www.brownells.com

Well, I tried it on my 870 and it fits! Thanks CalebM aand others for giving me that info. I got the wrong one somehow. This has happend to me before on E-bay. I have ordered grips and got the grips that someone put in an old package. I always see factory grips put in Hogue boxes and sold as Hogue grips. I think the seller has no clue because anyone that knows Hogue knows they are soft rubber and not hard plastic so they are just going by the box or package info. I assume someone put a Rem 870 forearm in the package for a Mossberg 500. The good news is, I needed a new forearm and buttstock anyway for my Rem 870. Now all I need is a Mossberg forearm and a Rem 870 buttstock.
