Everybody should have my problems.

Anyway Marlin has recently released their 1894 in .41 mag and let me tell you it is on sharp looking lever. I have been wanting a lever for quite some time and Sheslinger is trying to make me buy it.

Tell me about .41 mag. I know I want a Marlin 1894 Lever and I really like the idea of .41 on paper but is it going to be a dead round soon. Would .357 be a better choice.

I don't need another rifle I am just having a bad day and came across a cool gun so I thought I would come to the ole' info tree so to speak.

So lemme have it .41 mag lovers and haters.

So, what is it with Tennessee women? Are Sheslinger and Tamara really representative? Is it something in the water? Can I get some? :D

I'd personally vote for the .357, although I can see three reasons for getting the .41 magnum.

1. You have a companion gun in .41 magnum.

2. You reload the caliber.

3. You want one.

That last one includes collecting, being a member of the idle rich, etc. I mean, as long as you're not spending the rent money, go for it. This is America after all.

I think the .41 will remain on the scene, for the time being, but only as an expensive niche. Any practical concerns (ie. hunting) can be handled by the .357 and .44 magnums.

If you get one in a pistol caliber, the next thing you'll want is a pistol of the same caliber to go with it (if you haven't one already). I prefer the .357 Mag or .44 Mag "lever guns" for this reason -- more choices of "matching" handguns.

With the most .357's allow you to use .38 ammo, which makes it a lot less expensive for "plinking" than .41 or .44 mags.

It's great being able to through a revolver, rifle and one box of ammo into your truck and be able to share it between the two.

That all said, a pistol caliber lever gun is a heck of a lot of fun!

.41 is a great caliber, and a Marlin .41 is on my to-buy list.

As mentioned, it is more expensive than .357. I do think it is here to stay, though.

The .41s demise has been predicted for many, many years.

But currently, I believe there are more firearms chambered in .41 Mag. than at any point in the round's 40 year history.

I think that speaks volumns on whether the round is going to be with us long-term or not.

Well, I chose .357 mag and I AM HAPPY!!!
Like Terry says, "There isn't a downside to a .357 lever action carbine".

What does that "dead cartridge" thing mean? You won't be able to buy them anymore? If that's so, I'd go with the .357 or maybe step up to the .44 mag/special. There's a like new .44 at my regular gun shop right now. The shop owner bought it at an estate sale. It has a sling and a Redfield scope. Mighty tempting. Smooth as glass. LOOKS like new.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't realize .41 had been around for as long as it has I thought it was a late 70s round. After reading up on it I think I am going to go for it.

I like the idea of variety and different calibers and it looks like the round is experiencing a bit of a rennassaince. I was going to go .357 because I own the handguns in that caliber but I want something a bit different, something that not everybody has. This will just be a fun gun but in my reading it seems like it would make a decent white tail getter should I ever have the desire.

I really like it's looks and the more I read about the caliber I really like the idea of it. So I think I will own a .41 mag Marlin by morning.

Thanks for the input. I have been wanting a Marlin lever for quite a long time.

I just did ballistics tables studies while in college and determined that with the heavier bullet, the .41 Mag shoots a bit flatter and retains energy downrange a bit better than the .44.

Being a guy who plugged Felon silhouettes at 100 yards regularly with a 4-inch .38 Special, I figured that the .41 would be a tiny bit better for deer hunting, if shot with 210-+ grain bullets from a 6+ inch barrel. Woulda bought one that year but I wuz buh-roke!:(

Yep, she's perfect. Really completes who I am. The word soulmate comes to mind. Where's that mushy wipe a tear from your eye smiley anyway.

She even does laundry which I thank God in Heaven for because I hate laundery. I will do everything else, cook, clean, whatever it takes but lord I hate laundery.

Anyway back to the gun. I will be sure to post pictures and a range report if I actually get one.

Hey, it's NOT *just* Tennessee women!

It's KENTUCKY women too! My wife just had one heck of a surgery. This morning, across the breakfast table she goes... "So, when are we going shooting again? I don't want to get rusty". I think it's something born into Southern women. Or it's something "transplanted" Southern women catch. They just like to shoot. Or, in my case, "out-shoot" ME! :) I don't care. I'm just happy she made it.
Oh, by the way. I've screwed up LOTS of laundry. Sometimes she lets me do the whites though. :) Difficult to screw up my underdrawers. (Except the time I somehow got a hot pink sock in with them. I wore pink drawers for months!:) )

That's what I get for having gone out with a Romanian, a Chinese, and one from Pennsylvania. No more foreigners for me! I'm currently looking for the future ex-buzz_knox's SO. ;)

Actually Sheslinger is a natural born Azzari. She is from Baku, Azerbajan and only recently became a red blooded Southern American by passing her citizenship test.

So basically I married a commie. Just kidding honey.

I bought one of the Marlin 1894s in .41 back in April.
There should still be some posts about ordering it on here under the title New Marlin .41 Magnum.

It is a neat rifle. I should take it out again tomorrow!

howdee, i bought a marlin 41 mag when the first batch came out in the 80s to go with my blackhawk 41. i keep in the jeep when driven round the ranch for feral pigs and such. the 210gr federals will flaten a pig out to about a 100yds. bum

I shot my .41 Magnum Marlin mostly with reloads. Mine use 215 or 210 grain LSWC bullets with enough old Unique to drive them at about 1,000 fps from a six-inch M57. (I haven't chronoed them from the Marlin yet.) At 50 feet I got about an inch and a half group, 50 yards, three inches and 10 inches at 100 yards. I blame my eyes for some of the spread at 100 yards. I couldn't pick out a spot too easily on the black silhouette target I was using. Peep sights instead of the open sights on the barrel would probably tighten the longer distance groups up some.

I haven't used Winchester Silvertips in the Marlin yet since I was low on them when I went to the range. I also plan to try Federal Cast Core 250 grain factory loads.

I expect the Marlin will be shot mostly with reloads, like my .41 handguns. I may work up a deer load with some 210 jacketed hollowpoints I have on hand.

Fortywonderful is what it is.

That really ought to be 'nuff said.

( PS: they kept saying the 41 was gonna go belly up soon, so every time I hit the big city I'd buy another 2-3 speedloaders. I've got 20 speedloaders now. )

Yo!

Pssst...

Sheslinger...

Click on the link above!!

.357 is the way to go!! Go with the Cowboy Logistics(TM) man!!

.357Mag Lever on the sling, SP101 on the hip. The makings of Cowboy Logistics(TM)!! :D

Get a GP100, move that to the hip, put the SP101 on the small of the back, and you've got Cowboy Logistics(TM) all done.

As for Sheslinger, she rocks! Hope I get the chance some day to get Sheslinger and my gf together for a picture..

My 2 cents worth

I had to jump in this tread. Yes, buy the Marlin, and .41 is not going to die. Yes, it's a great caliber ( especially for rifle/revolver combo). If I can still reload reasonably priced .577 Snider Enfield loads for an 1870 mkIII, how could the .41 mag ever die??? And....no his wife is not the only great gal in the world. My Kentucky girl bought me a Winchester P17 Enfield for our first Christmas together!!!!! How could I not marry her??? It was love at first peep sights.

FYI - FPS around 1900

Hello all, and happy shooting cslinger.

I have been wanting to buy the Marlin in .41 ever since I heard they were putting it back out. I figure that it will compliment my S&W Mod 57 nicely.

Anyway, I wrote to Federal Cartridge several months ago and asked what velocity range I could expect out of the 20 inch barrel Marlin and they responded that I should expect around 1900 FPS.

Just thought you might like to know.

Now, if only there were fewer guns or I had more money.

Be Safe

George
