Pictures as promised...

My camera sucks, so I did the bottom pic by laying the knife on the scanner bed. Still not a good look at the damage, but better than the camera would've done.

Keep in mind that the picture is not that great, and it's tough to see most of the damage from the pic. Believe me, it looks worse in person. Most of it is really cosmetic, but the tip of the blade and the nicks in the edge would require a bit of work to get rid of. I'll probably send it to Benchmade and let them do the work under their sharpening service. I'll probably include a letter as suggested and see what happens.

Oh rats, my daily carry knives look worse than that after a few weeks of regular use!

LOL.
The pictures don't really do it justice though. Also, keep in mind I worked on the blade for about an hour before I posted that. Also, because of the lighting in the scanner bed, most of the areas where the finish is rubbed off don't show up. They look black like the finish, when they are really just bare steel.

My Gryp is 440C - and, after nearly four years, still decent. My older Kershaw Blur is a tad beat-up, and, thankfully, the sandpaper is worn down, but it quickly took it's first new edge ever from my new Spydie Sharpmaker last summer. Both had been rated Maytag-proof previously - the Blur earning frequent flier points! Fortunately, my too-intelligent Whirlpool front load hasn't been in the 'wash-a-knife' rotation - yet. Oddly, even the lock-less Blur never opened - I did retrieve it wet one time, when it had fallen from my pocket (It likely was just loose in the dirty clothes - and totally my fault it was washed.

Get a Blur... I actually like it better, even if I am totally impressed with the 'Axis-lock'. Of course, my all-time favorite folder is a Buck 110 - love lock-backs. Then, there is that Buck #419 Folding Kalinga Pro in S30V... wow, what a well fitted knife - and the best functioning liner lock! While it is still relatively new, and still commands most of it's $150 MSRP, it is a bargain. I got it and the #408 fixed version as early Christmas presents (Aw, I shouldn't have!).

Don, Opps!

Jason I find myself some what embarassed now I see these pics and I think you are a tad fussey. That isn't what I was expecting in damage. At this point I guess this blade was being carried and more or less being saved for some last ditch event. That is fine by me, as I do it myself, but with a gun.

Oh dear lord help me that the gun doesn't get washed this same way! NAA mini...

Stainz ? I take you have made the laundering of blades to be a more habitual activity to "earn" this name?

Lol, maybe. It's still functional, I never said it wasn't. It does look worse than the pic though. It has some side-to-side wobble to it that I can't get rid of when I open and close it, too. It's still functional, it just doesn't look or feel like a new knife anymore...

Your knife really does not look that bad.

I tried Kershaw Leeks, part was T & E and after the first day, I had busted one, and the other two looked like "they had been rode hard and put up wet".

Ditto for some other "known" folders of "Modern Design.

Ironic to me, after seeing the Buck 110, is I recall when "lock backs" came out.
Buck 110s started being seen and then in my Area the preferred Choice was Case Mako Shark...fits my hands better being honest.

Cement Mixers sometimes "attract" tools and Many a Buck or Case Lockback, not to mention Slip-Joints by Case, Camillus, Shrade-Walden, Shrade, Imperial , Boker, Hen & Rooster and others...
Survived cement mixers, and Brick layers.

Ditto for those in Plants, Factories , and others in Bottling Plants.

Still I recall seeing cement being poured and workers "spreading" the cement coming out of a Cement Mixer and a worker retrieving a Buck 110 and "hey, you folks hit this under the water hose please".

Buck 110 was in the mix...
It had character, still it cleaned up and worked just fine.\

Locks in the rear like Buck 110 and Mako Sharks - just seem to be a bit stouter and hold up better it seems...
If'n one is going to have a locking knife that is...

sm, I've found my share of folders when I was in construction, but they were all the cheap variety that they sell to the hoodlums in the middle of the shopping malls and at gas stations. Never lucked up on a Buck or anything decent.

Jason, This will come a bit hard.. There is just one thing you can do, that will get this off your mind and no you can't trade off your wife.

What you must do is send me a pm, and then send me that knife. This will clear up any problems you ever had with that one.. ;-)

Ha ha! How'sabout I send you them dang dryer balls! :neener:

Jason

Naw, I'll pass on those I think.. Seems you weren't very impressed, err well you were, but didn't like the end result much.

Gee, try and help out and ya git's nuffin'!

Go figure that out

Were you serious? I thought you were joking just trying to take that knife off my hands. Hard to tell when folks are joking or serious sometimes with written word.
Were you offering to fix my knife or joking about me giving it to you?

Jason

I was just joking around guy...That finish is a gonner... it would cost more to fix it than a new knife just like it.. if it were one of a kind then I might see into the fixing. In fact a fellow has sent me a BP 6 shooter than he liked an awfull lot to fix. I could tell the way he posted that if he had 40 more just like it, that this one was still special.

I expect that piece to arrive Tuesday coming..

I finally got around to taking some pics of my Grip, bought it mid Nov'04.

Yours still looks new. LOL What ya end up doing with it??

Do you consider it a tool or a fashion accessory? ;)

I'm surprised that the edge got dinged up and the point got chipped. I've washed my SAK dozens of times over the years by accident and it never had problems like that... and it is "inferior" steel.

I'd say if you are looking for a new knife, look to Spyderco.

IF the dryer balls are hard enough to ding up the knife, then they must beat the hello out of the dryer tub.

I have washed knifed alot, usually when the wife tries to help and misses one, I have never had one open up while inside the wash, Usually with the shape my blades are in, I would have nothing but ribbons upon opening up the wash.

benchmade has a lifetime warrantee, they will fix it. its probably just a soft touch on the belts and then a final hone to them.

A tool, but I'm one of those guys that's anal about trying to keep his tools in best possible condition. FWIW, I reworked the edge and got the dings out and put a mirror edge back on it. After doing that and tightening the screws back up it's good to go. Most of the damage was cosmetic. It just kinda sucked because the knife was pretty much brand new when it happened, and I rarely spend that much money on folders. I make my own fixed blades that I use for "real work", and so I rarely buy expensive folders. All I usually do with them is open packages, etc., and keep in my pocket in case I need a cutting tool in an emergency, so I was probably a little overly-upset.

Surprisingly, no.

It's the first one I've had open up in the wash, too. I would've thought the same thing about cutting up the clothes, but that knife was shaving sharp and none of the clothes were cut up. Maybe she didn't have many clothes in there with it, Idunno.

I've had my mini-Griptilian for 4 maybe 5 years, can't remember it's been so long.

Don't worry about it dude, mine looks way worse than yours.

Have to say that I love that knife, mine is D2, got it at Cabelas.

I agree, send it back to Benchmade and see what they do. If you want a replacement, can't go wrong with another Mini Grip. If you want to upgrade, try a BM 707 Sequel or a BM 940 Osborne (my EDC).

It looks like you don't need to buy a new knife but you could if you wanted.

From the pics it just looks like you gave your knife some character.

Skunkabilly!!!

Where'ya been!?!?

Regarding the washed-and-dried knife, I'd just send it back to Benchmade for a resharpening; I like the "war-torn" look in a knife. ;)
